Events should be for socializing, not be out and about all day and just be there for the picture.

I agree with you if the event is 3 hours long. The camp-out is technically a 2+ day event where you camp at a state park. For those of us who camped there with our families and walked the trails, we enjoyed having caches to go hunt. Temp or perm status is irrelevant to my kids. They loved stamping the books with all of the stamps in the temp caches.

For those who camped there were plenty of opportunities to socialize but you can’t sit and socialize for 2+ days. At least I can’t.

As many may know, I hid temp and permanent caches for this event. I got personal input on some of the temps and enjoyed reading all the logs on the perms. Personally I think temp caches still have value at all weekend camp-out type events. I have given input as a campout committee member that the board will hopefully carry forward and consider for the next camp-out regarding how the WGA could potentially make the temp caching activity “count more”. For those who participated, it makes sense to acknowledge that participation somehow.

If I was single and into collecting smiley’s and not from the appleton area, I would certainly have left the park and hunted for smileys. But there were all kinds of cachers at the event (some 250 of them!) and the WGA attempts to hold an event that will hopefully please some of those people. If you don’t want to hunt temps, there’s no one putting a gun to your head. There were many people who were out on the trails hunting temps that whole weekend and I saw smiling faces and fun being had.

This is my last 2 cents on this topic.

I answered the question the original poster asked. All the rest of these posts are nonesense and don’t help the poster with what they wanted.

Besides getting their questions answered, the original posted now has a better understanding about “why” some people feel temps are logable and others not. I don’t think that qualifies as nonsense. I wouldn’t be so hard on the community of forum followers who try to offer insight on a posted question even if we tend to drone on with our own opinions at times.

Most of the posters here wrapper their comments with a line that basically says, “play the sport any way you want to, since only you take away what you put into it” In the case of Temps, if you feel like they deserve logging, then log them, if not, don’t. Pretty simple, really.

Naw, not that–just the latest battle in the ongoing war. It would have come up again sometime without your post, so don’t feel bad. Just keep on cachin’ and havin’ fun! 😀

And again and again and again…..

I’m happy to see that kmhiker came back and posted 🙂

I didn’t mean to offend “the community” with my nonsense comment. I was frustrated and expressed said frustration in my tone. I didn’t target any one person with my frustration. It was really the topic itself.

As s|s said which sorta reiterated my point, play the game how you want. It sounds like you have made up your mind on how you’d like to play and that’s what matters most now doesn’t it?

I’m very happy.. you can only mentor others so far and after a while it’s just wasted words.. now atleast the WGA doesn’t get the “dirty” face in this activity.. of allowing temp cache finds.

The Intregity of the WGA was all that I was hoping to see.. and I’m so glad to yet be a part of that and watch it grow/mature over the years.

Now when Geocaching.com forums blast away on the “RULES” we can stand proud as WGA members and know that we now follow them and don’t sway like a willow in the wind..

You can always “make up” your own rules to a game (which geocaching now has become.. I always called it a sport) and people can always bend rules to meet their own needs.. but it makes me sick on how the lust for numbers has made me lose respect in a few.

One that I respect… He found his “Balance”
BruceS and I once teamed up for a few days to geocache together.. for those of you who don’t remember him or myself.. we were ranked 2nd/3rd in the world of the sport years ago…. to make a long story short..

I saw the lust for numbers first hand … and perhaps no one really noticed how he “retired” shortly after our days together… his constant pushing for his ‘stats’ drove him .. Adventures drove me.. I wondered how this drive could keep his family together.. how when only focused on the numbers allows anything else in… Trust me.. also heard first-hand from the “1st” in the world that her family was failing … teen running amuck.. Now adays.. I also wonder how many families are being torn a*under by this lust of points.

So.. now that it’s just a ‘game’ I might get back into it soon.. and go on adventures again.. but not alone this time… the ‘spark’ is back in me in many ways… and I can’t wait to make memories again in this.. (oops almost called it a “sport”)… “game”..

I’ll head over now to refresh myself on the TERMS of GEOCACHING.COM.. and their RULES.. Because that’s how I want my “game” always played…

Happy to see a Lil’ Otter post and am nodding my head in complete agreement. Chasing numbers is not the only addictive aspect of the game either, add to it the LCG and creating Puzzles, two that I’ve been infected with but have managed to stave off to some degree. I’ve tried to temper my zeal for creating new Puzzles, but it hasn’t really worked out so far. The LCG I’ve been able to back-burner quite easily, especially when the lead has been so far out of reach. But just yesterday I went out and with a few hours to kill, got that hook right back in my mouth!

It’s cyclic in some ways, and you just have to learn to balance it with your other life, and that can be tougher than beating a smack addiction…

Welcome back Lil Otter! 😀 Keep focus, but remember it’s all about the journey. I hope to see you at an event again some time.

Glad to see you poke your head back in here LO. And yes, the WGA has come around to the position that you first made clear a number of years ago. We no longer promote the logging of temps because we do not want the good name of the WGA besmirched by logging practices that are not in conformity to gc.com guidelines. On the other hand, we are not making a big deal about it, and if some folks want to find work arounds, that is their choice and really harms no one, since numbers are meaningful only to the individual anyway.

Glad to see you LO. Hope to see ya on the trail.

We found this cache that can be logged multiple times in Milwaukee area by uncle fun, as we were looking thru the log book i don’t remember many names being on the log, Im sure after a event like WGA campout Uncle Fun was there almost daily changing the log after all after you find a cache dont you have to sign the log? all those multiple logs should have a signature to match shouldn’t they?

      #1909126

Not that I’m one to talk, but I think the point has been made.
It all comes down to how one wants to play the game. Views will ALWAYS be different. Back to work on my Back Fourty Cache…….. 😉
