I’ve got some vacation time coming up and I want to spend it hiking and caching. Wondering what some of your favorite State Parks are. I’ve only been to Roche-A-Cri and High Cliff (that I can remember.) I’m looking for one with a good balance between hiking trails and caches, as they are both important to me. I don’t want one with a couple of trails, but 30 caches. Vice verse, I want to integrate this hobby with the trip so a park with 50 miles of trails but only 2 caches is not ideal either.

*Not sure if this fits better here or in the “Recommended Caches” forum. Feel free to move if applicable.

Wyalusing state park is my favorite, but it does not match your criteria as it only has 2 caches in the park and very few in the general area.

Wildcat might meet your criteria, if you include the very close Kickapoo Valley Reserve, those two together will give you a nice mix of hiking and caches, and you can do KVR-Hilo while you are there. Both are horse friendly if you have equine friends.

Hartman Creek State Park is not too far from you, and while there are just a few caches within the park, they can be found on different trails, and the surrounding area has plenty of caches.

The trails at Hartman Creek vary from fairly level ones, some around lakes, in the eastern portion of the park, to hillier and longer hikes in the western part. Nice variety there.

Rib Mtn has a lot of nice caches, views and trails. The main road is under construction but there is another access on the NW side. If are looking for camping too your outta luck due to construction. Good 2 day trip tho to cover it unless you have machines for legs.

Go up to the eagle river area in the state forest, sort of sporadic for caches but a lot of nice trails with a cache or two on them.

The Coon Forks area http://coord.info/GC140HH was a awesome mix of trails, camping and caches but I see JPS just archived many of them. It was a great group of caches and I don’t see any explanation why. But he has placed a handful of new ones so there’s 20 or so right in the immediate area and a bunch more with in a few minutes drive. I was tired and sore for days but it was one(two) of those trips that stick with you. No real hills or anything but nice views and lots of distance to cover.

I’ll second Hartman Creek. Lot’s of good caches within 10 miles of the park. We’re able to hike, swim and fish on a 3 day trip there and still have time to leave the park and find 25-30 caches. There always seem to be a few new ones being hidden.

Point Beach is another good one and all of the above applies as well as a 6 mile bike trail within the park that will lead you to some of the caches.

Hartman’s is good and close to you, but if you’re looking for one a little farther outside of your “home area,” I highly recommend Gov. Dodge S.P.

Two different campgrounds in the park to choose from, Cox Hollow and Twin Valley (the better one IMHO). Currently there are 15 caches there. Some ECs, virtuals, and regulars. Highlights include caves, waterfall, bluff formations, lakes, open prairies, forests, rolling terrain, etc. Lots of trails and acres to cover. And if you run out of things to do in the park, there are lots of great places to check out within a few mile radius including Spring Green and Tower Hill State Park (no cache there though anymore, but still and interesting place).

Our families favorite state park is Kohler Andraes State Park in Sheboygan. There are around 27 within the park and 76 within 7 miles of the park. Lots of trails along the beautiful sand dunes.

Hartman Creek is also a great park. We visit there often as we are only 10 miles from it. Great trails around the lakes and some memorable finds within the park. And like mentioned above there are quite a few within a short distance from the park.

Rock Island State Park – not a ton of caches, but excellent trails. And nearby Washington Island with quite a few caches and scenic gems.

27 caches, that intrigued me. I checked the map and only found 7 within the park.

Found something strange. I typed in an address for Belgium, Wi because I knew it would get me close to K-A and Harrington Beach. Thing is, I misspelled it as Belguim, WI. Took me just south of Ripon and the showed a dot with “Operation Troop freedom May 15th, 2010.” What’s that all about?

Alright Glorkar…you have my interest on that link you posted. That dot that says “Operation Troop Freedom” is very very very close to my hunting land, hell, its close to my stand!! There is nothing in that area that would make any sense for something like that. The old military road that ran from Green Bay to Prairie Du Sac passes through our hunting land right near that dot…still not sure what that’s all about though!!
