My previous question got me thinking about another one that often appears in these cacndidates’ forums…  How did you first learn about the WGA and how long have you been involved with the organization?  (Please note:  Posting frequently in the useless drivel forum is an acceptable form of WGA involvement…  😉 )

If you have already addressed this topic in your personal candidate’s statement, you can refer us to that or just repeat here the information that you shared in that.  Thanks.

I joined back in 2010, I think. I have gone to the 4 closest events the WGA has had to my home since 2011. All the others were over 150 miles from my home. I found the WGA just by searching the web about geoaching stuff when I was first really getting into it.

I think I may have posted this before but wanted to say it again because like your first kiss or first car, it sticks out as a special memory.

2009 WGA Campout High Cliff State Park (hey, isn’t the camp out there again this year?)

I found the link to the WGA event off the Frog’s map of caches. Knew nothing of the group or what to expect. There I saw a ton of people and met one of my puzzle master idols…seldom|seen who I spoke of in hushed tones of deep respect. We did the night caches with the Lacknothings and then my family returned came back the next day to do more caches in the 30 MPH wind.

First of all, I started geocaching in spring 2010.  I don’t remember exactly the first time I clicked on the WGA banner on a cache page but I was a newbie.  It brought me to the site but I didn’t know if I should be there or not.  I perused a bit but I didn’t join in on anything and then kind of forgot about it.  Then February 2011 I attended the WGA chili event because it was really close to home and that was my first introduction to the WGA.  I believe Zuma was the president that year and he enthusiastically greeted our family and introduced us to a few people.  We liked that event and it wasn’t long before I started participating in the forums.  I was so nervous the first time I posted in the Thread Stealers forum, wasn’t sure if I was welcome in there or not but everyone was friendly in there with the useless drivel and when I needed things like “craphas” explained or what a FTP was, someone would always cheerfully let me know.  I then planned to attend the 2011 spring campout but had to cancel at the last minute because my daughter was sick.  But I’ll never forget how friendly everyone was, people even offered to help me pitch my tent and set up camp if my husband stayed home with our daughter.  I mean, I hadn’t even met these people!  So after that of course I was hooked on the WGA and have been very involved ever since, attending most WGA events and regularly participating in the forums.

Our first WGA event was the 9th annual WGA Geo Picnic held in September 2009 at Lake Wissota, in fact, this was our first geocaching event ever.  I remember feeling awkward as we knew very few people ( I was definitely out of my comfort zone!!)  but that feeling didn’t last for long.  We were welcomed by all.  Looking back, it is hard to believe I felt uncomfortable.  Today when we go to a WGA event we feel excited to catch up with those we haven’t seen for a while and it is always great to meet new people.
