Someone thought he found what was left of one of my caches but all he found was broken pieces. He did not find the cache. He logged it as a find and said in his log that he thought the cache was destroyed. I can’t edit his post which is what I would like to do. All I can do is delete it or create another entry that explains his problem. What is the protocol and ethics about deleting someone else’s log entry?

I generally do not delete others logs, and prefer to ask the rare person who logs something wrong to correct it themselves.
In this case, I would email the person who made the errent log entry and ask them to change it.

I can’t speak to “protocol and ethics”, but the guidelines require that you delete any logs that are not legitimate, including the one you mentioned. You can ask the owner to do it, but if they tell you to “go pound salt” or just ignore you, you will need to do it yourself.
Was the cache still there and intact or was it all over the ground in pieces? I have to assume that the cache was still in place and that the trash on the ground was unrelated to your cache.
I agree with Ralph that a note to the cacher explaining that the cache is still there would be the route to go. Maybe ask them to edit their log, but I myself would probably not delete it.
I have deleted double logs in the past with no complaints, but I sent a message explaining why. Oh, there was one virtual cache I owned that I deleted a log from a college professor that couldn’t follow logging instructions…. 😈 🙄
