OK let me preface this by saying that I have obtained bronze status (got my sticker and pin) and I know many people enjoy EarthCaches. Me right now I could take them or leave them but I realize there are many out there and I will do some of the local ones to me to give them a try.
I have heard Trekin’ & Birdin’ say that they carry a EarthCache “kit” with them so they are always prepared. I believe I have heard Cachin’ Bunny say something similar to this also. So here is my question What would you suggest that a cacher puts in their “kit” so that they can always be prepared to do an EarthCache?
I suspect there are a lot of cachers that are like me in this attitude and maybe creating a list of EarchCaching tools may help you who are very passionate about these convert some people like me.
10/24/2008 at 2:15 am #1897137In my EarthCache kit I have a pool thermometer – get temperature of water at a spring site, pH testing kit – measure pH of a stream, measuring tape (stiff metal one) – depth of a spring, measuring tape (soft cloth one) – wrap around a rock, compass (school type for measuring angles) – estimate angle that rock has been moved from horizontal, and a notebook for notes. Its all kept in a one-gallon jug – to measure rate at an artesian well. I’m sure there are other handy tools that I don’t have yet.
The kit doesn’t take up much room and stays in the trunk of the car so its there if I happen to be near an EarthCache.

Hey! I just submitted our next EarthCache for approval. I suppose it might show up sometime next week, the way things seem to be going. If it comes out during the work day, it will take till evening for me to go in and “pretty” it up. I submit those with the basic info, then fix up the listing once it’s been transferred over.
I’ve been waiting patiently to hear from someone from Devil’s Lake State Park for another one we want to place. Nothing yet.
10/24/2008 at 4:54 pm #1897141Oh yeah – the camera !!!! 😯 I keep the camera in my regular caching bag, not the EarthCache kit, so I completely forgot about it when thinking about the kit. Definitely need the camera. 😳

We have an Earthcaching kit whta is basically self contained in the 1 gallon plastic container. OUr contents include
- – Small Tape measure
– An inexpensive watch with a second hand
– pH testing kit
– Thermometer (one used in fishtanks)
– Hygrometer
– Bobber on fishing line (flate rate on rivers ft/sec)
– Protractor
– Lamintaed numbered cards (If we are doing an EC run and take lots of pics we number the ECs we do)We always have a camera with us and as different types of ECs come, we add to it.
