New caches published and the page clearly states they aren’t available after dark. The parking area also has a sign (where one of the caches is located) that clearly states the area is closed at dark. The one at the sign right at the parking area and is logged last night as a FTF and I blow it off as “OK” because it’s near the road. No other logs on the rest, so I give the benefit of doubt that they did the right thing. I did two others on the way to work this morning and noticed lots of footprints near both GZ’s. Sure enough the same cacher(s) signed these 2 logs which meant they were trespassing last night in a nature area. The online logs also clearly state the time and it’s obviously well past “dark”.

02/07/2012 at 4:05 am #1947311Cache owners need to take a stand and start deleting the logs that are obviously in violation. If it was my cache, that is exactly what I would do. There is a reason there are hours posted and we need to honor those hours, regardless of whether we agree with them or not. It really upsets me to think that geocachers would knowingly violate the instructions clearly posted on the cache page and at the conservancy also.

02/07/2012 at 4:36 am #1947312Sad thing is that when the FTF Alert goes off it doesn’t say anything about “hey! Read the cache page before you run off and violate the owner’s wishes or the property’s regulations”.

So delete their logs, and send them an e-mail telling them why. Maybe they’ll learn to take the extra minute or two to read the cache page before they charge off into the night.

02/07/2012 at 5:03 am #1947314I have deleted logs in the past that have stated caching after dark in our cemetery caches. I have also requested a specific time for caches to go online to alleviate this problem.

How hard can it be to walk back to your car, get a pen, and go back to sign the log.
I would let this go except the same log was written at other local caches too.

I’ve had a similar scenario multiple times. I generally email the cacher and explain that I understand that accidents happen. I normally ask if they took a picture of the container they can send me or if they can provide anything specific about the container, hide style, etc. I tell them that I will let this substitute for the physical signature if they contact me within x days.
I get 1 of 2 responses. The 1st is “no response” in which case I delete the log after x days. The 2nd is normally very positive and they can explain something about the cache and I call it close enough.

There is always grass nearby…I have used a smear of green in the past without incident…just be sure to mention it in the log…I often grab a pic of the cache as well in case additional proof is needed.
03/28/2012 at 3:54 pm #1947318Yep, there is always a way to make a permanent mark of some sort on a log sheet. In those cases I usually take a picture of the log/cache as well just in case.
I do try to avoid using blood, however. 😯

LOL. Crucify might be a bit much. I was thinking more along the lines of keelhauling and public humiliation for such a major infraction.
