Hi all,
I am fishing for ideas of what to activities to include at the Chippewa Valley Geocaching Festival June 3. The only idea that I am sure of is giving a free geocoin to the first 400 folks who arrive. That and on site camping.
But I am looking for other ideas that would make folks want to attend. Here is a list that I am mulling at this point, but I want more ideas:
Travel Bug Trading
Coin Trading/Selling
Geogear and paraphernalia expo
Geocoin Poker Tournement
Kid’s Stuff—caches, scavenger hunt
cache race thru the woods
gps accuracy challenge
orienteering class
You can comment on any of the above ideas if ya want, but what I am really looking for is more ideas.

02/09/2007 at 4:34 am #1769941Geocoin poker is a great idea. Oh who are we kidding, we are in for any type of gambling. 😀 There is a great idea for a geocoin poker tourney at this link……
http://www.geocoinfest.com/website/gamerules.htmlthere is a three geocoin buy in and the coins are split among the top three players.
Other than that we got nothing.
02/09/2007 at 5:34 am #1769942A timed “cache” run using orienteering punches.
02/09/2007 at 9:37 pm #1769943The answer to your question is simple. As our college-age kids have told me, there’s nothing cool about geocaching.
Sure, it’s fun, adventurous, good for you and enlightening, but definately not cool.
That’s why I like it. 8)
02/10/2007 at 2:39 am #1769944Zuma My question is… Where is it going to be held? Will there be a lake nearby? You could hold a fishing contest or a kayak race where people could race against “Team Honeybunnies.” If they (Team Honeybunnies) lost they would have to give up their rights to the Moun10 bike geocoin. That would draw a lot of interest. 😆
It sounds like you have a great start with all of the ideas already.
02/10/2007 at 3:41 am #1769945Thanks for the ideas and keep em coming…..
The event will be in a rural area of Chippewa Falls, right on the Chippewa River, so if the Honeybunnies want to put their Mount10bike coin up for a kayak contest or use it for their ante in a geocoin poker game, either would work. Thanks for the ideas, and thanks to Seth for being willing to share.

I have a couple of Kayaks….and I have been known to race them 😉
02/10/2007 at 3:56 am #1769947Funny, I have a couple yaks too. I’m liking this. Not racing for pinks but for THE COIN… **Sounds like a dare, don’t it**
Serious note: Orienteering, timed runs, puzzle (CSI Style or something like that; Fractal Soup I believe is a cacher who did a bunch of these types of things…). All great ideas!
02/10/2007 at 10:39 am #1769948As kbraband pointed out, College kids would have little interest in a geocaching event. You need to know your audience to form a successful marketing program. Offer line dancing and you will get a different crowd than if you offer boccie ball. Offer many temps and you will get a different crowd from those who love the challenge of a good puzzle cache. All of the suggestions that have been made will bring people to the event, but real success for the event depends on defining the population you want to attract and tailoring you program to meet their interests.
02/10/2007 at 12:59 pm #1769949A race would be a good idea, but keep in mind that caching is popular in all age groups and those with small children or those closer in age to “Old” wouldn’t be able to, or would find it extreemly difficult to participate. Puzzle caches would level the playing field a bit.

Heh. I’ve only ever paddled whitewater playboats really, so the hull is like a surfboard with a seat. Even when I work up a head of steam a granny in a canoe can pass me in a heartbeat. Planing hulls don’t make very good downriver boats.
As for the Moun10Bike. Mine! Mine! No…Mine! Wait for it… Mine! Miney, mine, mine, mine! But I’ll let everyone who asks log it for sure. It wouldn’t be much of a gift if I didn’t share it.
And if the geocoin poker does happen, I’ll be sure to throw something tasty in. The version at Coinfest 07 is using a three coin entry fee with winner take all I believe. Some very lucky person will become an instant collector.

I’ve made my peace with not being cool anymore. Cool killed too many brain cells. That’s why I can’t solve many of Marc’s puzzles!
02/10/2007 at 11:41 pm #1769952As one of those on the “older side” I love the idea of kayaking as an activity for a geoevent – whether or not it’s a race.
02/11/2007 at 4:48 am #1769953Ok, not knowing ANY pat of the river, I do not know if this would work, but how about just a float trip kayaks or canoes. I like the race idea too. Kayaks and canoes! I have 2 canoes!
