What would you do????

We recently had someone from out of state log some of our caches. They emailed me and let me know they were going to do a certain cache and asked about other “must do” caches in the area. Then while they were here they emailed me again and asked if I would like to come and watch them swim to my cache. I received a few out of state logs on this particular cache. I then received an e-mail from an officer of the caching group in their state telling me all the logs are bogus except one. In fact, the finder posted on his/her FB page asking if anyone wants their name on caches in WI. Some of the other finders in question posted they had spent the day at the museum and others were enjoying the rain in their state. I realize they are only cheating themselves but as a cache owner isn’t your responsibility to try to keep the logged finds honest?? Would you let these finds stand or delete them?? Curious as to what others think is the right thing to do here.

I forgot to add that all of the questionable finders found caches in their home state on the date in question.

I think that I would contact the cachers involved, depending on how many there are and how much time it would take, and ask them to delete their logs if they did not actually visit the cache. Then I would let it go. It is only a game, after all, and a game at which nobody “wins” or “loses” at that.

If I could, I would flog them and then keel haul them.

Since that is against Groundspeak rules, I would simply delete their logs without the courtesy of sending them an email.

You’ll have to do as your conscience guides you, but after reading the logs, I must say as a storyteller….they sure beat “tftc!” 😉

I think I’d push them a bit. Ask them to explain how they were able to log a cache in their local area as well as here on the same day. That way you’re making them aware of the issue and giving them the option to do the right thing.

I say make ’em walk the plank matey! I have deleted a log of a some what highly regarded cacher from WI, when I saw that they did not sign the log. 25,000+ logs to your name does not sway me one bit.

I agree that it is only a game and do what you feel is proper.

We noticed that one of the finders even teletransported themselves to North Carolina to log a find on a 5 star puzzle cache. We say delete their logs. There’s no need to tippy-toe around and worry about hurting their feelings. Who knows how many times they’ve gotten away with this garbage in the past?

As I think about this a bit more, I guess I’m inclined to agree with the majority, though we tend to be more of the “whatever floats your boat” mindset. Here’s why. You had been communicating back and forth with the one who actually did make the find and had established some level of “relationship.” He turned around and burned you, all in the name of so-called fun, at your expense. It’s not really very nice to treat someone’s kindness with such behavior behind their back.

So, creative logs or not…they don’t deserve the high terrain find here. My two cents.

while the 5 star terrain cache was one that one cacher said he found some time in the past, you cannot overlook that they are able to find caches in Colorado and Wisconsin on the same day as well as Colorado and Manitoba, Canada on the same day.

Actually, the DGS looks legit. http://www.dirtbaggeocachingsociety.com/ They even have a Great Lakes Chapter.

I’m trying to figure out why you would want to log a cache you haven’t found. The main reason I log finds is so found caches don’t show in my PQs. Am I missing something? Is there a cache prize out there for high find counts that I’m missing???
