What would you not own if it were not for geocaching?

A while back there was a thread here along the lines of “what’s in your geocaching backpack?”

Similar, but different. As we’re cleaning the garage and putting away the snowshoes and trench shovel and getting out the hip waders, I realized these are things we would never own if it were not for this game.

So–besides a GPSr and an assortment of cache containers–what gear have you bought that you would not have if it were not for geocaching?

Other than the GPSr, right now nothing. But I read this thread with interest, as I want to know what I need to get as I do this more. And what are more or less “essentials”, versus “nice-to-have extras”. Thanks for posting this, gotta run!

was driving a ford mustang my first year in arizona… once i became obsessed with caching, i needed something to get me out in the desert on unpaved roads (and some places with no roads at all).

We carry a few strange things in the car that are probably not “survival gear”!

1) 75 feet of nylon rope (it was 100).
2) Camo, brown, and silver duct tape.
3) Matchstick holders (they keep disappearing), no matches!
4) Little zip-lock baggies.
5) Digital camera (ALRs are OK).
6) 3 pairs of dry socks.

I occassionally carry my son in the car, for “Evil Monkey” caches! But I guess he would be considered “survival gear”! 😀

Yeah.. when I bought my last 2 ammo cans at Fleet Farm she asked if I had found everything. My “order” consisted of:
– 2 slightly used ammo cans
– 3 boxes of little debbie snack cakes (they were on sale) and I figured they would come in handy at the campout

I said, no I was really looking for something else but since I was in the store I figured I would pick up a couple necessities.. She looked at me strange. I never offered what I was actually looking for and she never asked. Why do they bother asking if you found everything if they don’t plan on offering help if you say no?

At walmart when I clean out the matchstick containers and small notebooks, I go through the self checkout to limit the strange looks… Of course there was the time that I returned 3 times for craft googly eyes (some of you may appreciate this if you did one of my recent caches at the campout)

Oh and I have to add, Gorilla Glue to the list of items I would not own were it not for geocaching. And 3 GPS units..

I’m sitting at my desk trying to come up with something that hasn’t been mentioned yet. There it is, right in front of me. It’s a 3″ x 3″ x 2″ high clear plastic box filled with 2-3″ long sharpened pencils.

Let’s see….
I had a GPS handheld before we started caching, and may have bought another one, so I won’t list that.
I’m pretty sure Blondie would have come along sooner or later.
I might have bought one or two ammo cans for storing stuff.
Was kind of looking for a truck anyway, so won’t count the Suburban.
Needed a new laptop anyway.
Wouldn’t have had to buy three new cameras if I would quit losing them.
We probably wouldn’t have nearly as many pens or rechargable batteries.
We would have gotten rid of a lot of stuff instead of collecting it in the swag box.

The one thing that I can say, without a doubt, that I would never have a reason to purchase if it were not for geocaching is cammo duct tape. I probably wouldn’t even know there was such a thing. Even if I had, I can’t think of a good reason to cammo my ducts.

My Garmin Nuvi for paperless caching to supplement my handheld Lowrance and a good set of rain gear. I love caching in the rain…no muggles[:D]

And a hatchet. My wife thought I was nuts, but we use it!!!
