I had read an article about geocaching in a Chicago newspaper a number of years ago. My buddies and I all have had GPS units for years and have loved using them to mark fishing spots, hunting spots, etc… General Navigation. One day in January 2003 I was messing around on the web and looked up the geocaching page. I quickly got excited when I realized this was an organized hobby with rules, enforcement, etc… I also thought it would be a great way to teach my students about latitude and longitude. I forwarded the web address to my friends and we all agreed to meet out at Pamperin Park one snowy January day and try this thing…

Our first cache was a “no find”. However, our second cache was “Pamperin Park” by Tenner. We were hooked! Found our first travel bug that day as well.

My buddies and I were all under one team name “Johnny U-Boat” (don’t ask, I’m just a World War II buff). After awhile, I really got hooked into the hobby and got my wife involved. Now Amy loves it even more than I do! My friends went off with their families and created their own team names: (CHAOS4U and TEAM SALMON). I switched our team name to “Green Bay Paddlers” in order to incorporate Amy’s and my love of canoeing!

We’ve gotten my parents into the hobby and bit. Almost close enough to where they will buy their own GPS. Amy’s parents tried it once – not sure it will take there!

    Fun thread – good stuff!

My husband, (who heard about this from work by Taxman1) introduced me to this sport and we formed our team. We have since taken two others on a geocaching adventure, liked it so much they joined: Sleeps2 (they live in Iowa) and Astronomer’s Lighthouse Hunters from Green Bay.
Not much of a history, but we all gotta start from somewhere.

My husband (Professor) was sitting in a sauna at our local YMCA paging through a magazine someone had left in there and he found an article on geocaching…the rest is history. But we have no roots! Earth Angel

I think you could call us 2nd and 3rd generation. As most of you might know, I call Trudy and the Beast “Mom” and “Dad”, while Ginger520 calls me the same. T & tb got us started shortly after they did, though we are definitly less active.

Okay, I’m a little scared of this one…My Sister and her husband introduced me, then one of my daughters to Geo. So that makes my sister my mother…my brother my father…my daughter my sister. Then I took my husband one day, making him my son, and my sister’s brother her grandson. My sister,brother-in-law, daughter who is my sister, and I took my son, so that makes my son my son, and my sister’s nephew her grandson, and my brother’s nephew his grandson, and my daughter who is my sister is my son’s aunt. My husband who is my son is now my son’s brother and my daughter who is my sister’s daughter and my brother’s daughter is my sister? (no wonder my oldest daughter is staying away from Geo…all the money being invested into her college education is paying off, eh?) Oh man, someone stop me please!

Oh wait…my sister and brother-in-law have three kids who are their kids, making my nieces my sisters and my nephew my brother. Thus making my brother-in-law and sister’s kids, who are my son and sister, their sister and nephew. And my husband, who is their uncle and my son, is their nephew.

Yikes, does anyone hear a country song being written? Sounds a little like steel guitars in the background. And while we have a car on blocks in the front yard (not really…it’s in the driveway w/ out the blocks), nowhere in my house will you find a 13 inch black and white tv stacked on top of another one that doesn’t work anymore. And I do have all of my teeth inside my mouth. LOL!!!

Then of course there are those I introduced who don’t live in my house. I don’t even want to go there! It appears that there is a really big tree with ONE really big branch on it. Thankfully it only grows in the land of Geo! I generally like my trees w/ more than one branch!

Okay, are you all as confused as I am?
