Seeing an entry about a new goe-cacher made me pause for a moment, and think about the vast increase in cachers lately. And how it is clogging the system. Have you tried logging on Sunday?

It’s hard to tell how many cachers become hard core, and end up logging alot. In the last week some 36,000 cachers entered logs. Although GC.COM is upgrading and attempting to keep up with the increases, I wonder if enough is enough?

Or perhaps a Premiun Plus membership, where you get access to another computer system that will allow faster logging? Or something…….

For a new sport, geo-caching is certainly experiencing its share of growing pains.

I wonder how many will really keep on caching. I know around here, geocaching workshops have been presented through teacher education kinds of deals, I suppose as an idea for geography lessons. They also were offering an afternoon during an “ecofitness” series through work.

(Eco fitness is the term for going out in nature and hiking or canoeing or stuff like that. Cracked me up!)

So there may be a whole mess of folks that log a dozen finds and then never do anymore. But I know what you’re saying about trying to log on on Sundays. Since we sometimes spend our weekends doing other things– 😯 –we aren’t always contributing to the load. But I have had that maddening experience.

🙄 I could be off base here but it seems that the most long lasting sports have been the ones that allow, even welcome, all different levels and interest areas of participation. Some people love getting the numbers, some people go for the big hikes, some people see the short hikes to unique spots or creative hides as the best part of the sport.

So as the sport grows and developes perhaps specially logging centers will help with the congestion? I am sure the computer types can come up with all sorts of solutions when the situation needs tweaking. Perhaps you put in all your info and hit a button to send the information in the middle of the night?

Just imagine the differnt leagues or divisions and the cool events that kind of organized diversity might create! I have noticed that groups who restrict membership or discount groups with a different focus than the majority generally inhibit membership and hurt the group as a whole.

      Just my morning thoughts. Pam

You are right on base! I have to agree with your post about the sport. I know several cachers who only do a few caches a year but they are usually caches that involve a long hilke or a certain park. They aren’t in it for numbers but rather for the uniqueness that geocaching offers them. Each team has their own reasons for caching and all are acceptable.

It can offer travelers a way to find an out of the way or an uncommon area to view something that is just plain different. Let’s not limit people from becoming new cachers. We need to welcome everyone. We all started somewhere. Just my opinion.

I guess being a latecomer to the sport I would hate to be a hindrance to all the people who have been doing this for years. I will start trying to log all my finds on Sunday night starting at 10 pm if the system isn’t to busy, If it is I’ll stay up till it’s done and to log my finds on Monday night would just be inappropriate.. As for having a premium membership I think if you build it they will come.. I’m sure more than just yourself mark are sick of Geocaching.com being tied up at night. I say if they do the requirements should be you must have logged 5000 finds and have at least 3 yrs a regular member of geocaching.com.

SO, if it is difficult to log finds on gc dot com on Sundays due to high traffic, why not log on different days? Wednesday evening perhaps? The site is quite usable most of the time. There is only a problem if you feel the need to participate in the mob during the peak day at the peak hours.

It’s like this: It hitting yourself in the head with a hammer hurts, and you feel pain each time you hit yourself in the head with the hammer, consider NOT hitting yourself in the head with the hammer.

Another example: If you dislike the charring and blistering that is evident after putting your hand in the camp fire, stop putting your hand in there. Maybe put your hand in a bucket of 72 degree water instead.

Funny you should ask. You may use it, but be aware that I may use the topic or sentence in a future book. That said, PLEASE use it. Very few people deal with the Hammer Paradox effectively…
