Before the new version of the web site went into service, there was a link to a file of Wisconsin WI-FI hotspots. Does anybody have that file or know where it is on the new site?

    Thanks,
    Don

Give this one a shot. I believe it is the one you seek….

Well, this was a web site with a list of spots yes. However, I thought somebody in the group had created a gpx or loc file of all the spots that we could load into GSAK or other similar programs.

Maybe that part of it was just my imagination.

OOPS…. Sorry, you meant this file?? (Attached) 😛

I’m sure it may be partially out of date… It’s fairly old…

Yep, thats the one. Thanks! Are you the person that created it or do you just have a copy?

There used to be a linky on the old board, but I can’t find it. I just sent Jeremy and Tie home from our picnic booklet assembly. I’m sure Jeremy will point us to the link somewhere around here

    Thanks for the file flusingrouse!

    Gotcha,

It would be nice if somebody was able to update/maintain the list. That would be a nice feature of the web site.

    Just my two cents worth.

P.S. Thanks for all the help!

Oops… this file was available for download from the new WGA site, but there was no link to it so it was impossible to find. It is available for download here:

    http://wi-geocaching.com/info/WisconsinWiFi.loc

I added a link to it to the Web Links module so it is now accessible. As Bill said, this file was put together by kbraband (I think) back in Nov 2004, so it is kind of out of date.

As far as sharing other Wi-Fi hot spot locations, I guess we could start a Wiki page to do this where everyone could add the ones they know of, though it would not be as convenient as having a LOC/GPX file with the coords of all the spots. Any other ideas?

I don’t know the website software you are using, but here is an idea. What if we use one of the databases (like the milestones or States/counties/countries) to hold this and provide a way to download a text file or similar of the data? Someone could then periodically get the text file, run it through GPS Babel, and then upload the corresponding GPX and LOC files. I wouldn’t have an issue with doing the upload/conversion/downloads if the data was available.

I just noticed that there is a wifi hotspot waymarking category. Would be nice to see some local ones listed.
