In the course of your geocaching, who do you patronize in the course of preparation and on the day of caching? I’m talking about buying supplies, batteries, food, gasoline and just about anyone else who receives a buck or more due to the hobby?

Anyone know where I could pick up some of those nifty Millitary Decon containers we used at the High Cliff Geo-campout? One of the Arny Navy surplus stores I checked didn’t have any since last year.

Yes, I bought all of those for WGA at Army Surplus Warehouse for $1.79 each.
PLEASE Before you release any of these containers into the woods, use a hairdryer to heat and remove the lable on the container, and a clothes iron to melt and remove the embossed instructions on the lid (use a piece of aluminum foil between the lid and the iron so the iron isn’t messed up). Those containers held chemical/biological decontamination kits, and anyone finding one in the woods and reading the instructions and lable could create quite a stir of panic with the authorities.

06/17/2003 at 12:34 am #1745495Thanks for the reply Cachecows! If I do end up buying some, you can be assured the markings will be obscured. That’s the first thing I do to my ammo boxes too.
I am sorry if went slightly off topic. My original post was mostly on topic with 3 examples of local business.

06/17/2003 at 1:11 am #1745496Perhaps I should have been a little more specific and said LOCAL businesses. My point being to determine who locally benefits from our hobby money. The reason is to create a list of potential sponsors and donors for future association activities. Just a little idea I have bouncing around in my cranium.
I’ll begin the list by saying that all of my batteries have been purchased at Walmart. My gasoline, at Speedway. My bug spray at Osco.

Waukesha06/19/2003 at 2:55 pm #1745497Radio Shack: batteries, FRS radios.
Gander Mountain: bug suit, binoculars, boots, boonie hat!
Pick ‘N’ Save: peanut butter, bread, nutri-grain, bottled water.
Cousins: Foot long sub! Mighty hungry after a long day of hiking!
07/05/2003 at 1:50 pm #1745498I go to American Science (60th & Oklahoma) for alot of things… even the boxes to use. I bet they would be glad to be a sponsor… the store has many teens as clerks and whenever they ask why I am buying multiple oddball stuff and an ammo box (like I am building a bomb or something) after telling them what I am doing, a few of them will exclaim… Ahh… Geocaching… yesssss….
I also hit (well, not physically hit it) the dollar stores or the 99 cents always (what is the difference of that penny??) and rummage sales… people really dont know what they are selling at rummage sales, sometimes you can find things still in the packages for 25 cents. Then there are always the after a holiday sale anywhere… like Target… 75 % off! Woo hoo! Oh yeah… one more… Sherpers in Hales Corners… fantastic place to find anything… lately they have a whole wall of ammo boxes of every size imaginable. I tried to convince my husband to buy the one that stood 5 feet tall… but, alas… how the heck would you EVER hide that thing??!

Waukesha07/08/2003 at 12:10 am #1745500HEY!! That is a great idea! We still have some of that cammo tape, could pick up some more… need some dew cans on it also. Hmmm… seems like a lot of work. Maybe I will settle for the one that is about 2 feet high, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet long… looks like it would make a great stool to place your butt while checking out the cache… oh wait a minute… how can you sit on it and check it out?? So many decisions! (BTW… the inside of it might even hold the Beast… Trudy, do you need a break for awhile?)

When Trudy needs a break, she just locks the beast in the cellar.
07/10/2003 at 12:39 am #1745502We usually go to American Science & Surplus, Walgreens for trinkets. Sherpers Surplus for misc.supplies, Target for RubberMaid containers. REI for hiking gear & convertable pants(when on sale)
Culver’s for food. Amoco for fuel. -
