    I agree.

Cheezehead, I can understand your point, but maybe look at it this way. The church is doing a fundraiser for whatever. To raise the needed money, they are selling raffle tickets at $1.00 per ticket or 6 for $5.00. It is still your choice on what you want to do.

I personally gave up logging temps at any event due to the, “let people play how they want to,” as long as I agree with it opinion.

No, not the same thing Furfool. The only reason extra tickets were given was to make temps count for something. I am not saying I should have gotten an extra ticket. But the tickets were for the general drawing.
Shouldn’t a bonus ticket have been handed out if you found all the Perm caches? What if it was reversed and you only got an extra ticket on for Perm caches? They are the ONLY ones that do count. But what if there were a handful of Terra, Navie & Big Bob caches. They are caches, they have log books, but they are not able to be recorded on GC.com either.
Would people go find them only?.

My original argument has nothing to do to how people play the game. It’s just an unfair/disadvantage to those who choose not to play the game that way.
And maybe this is a stretch in thinking here, and there’s been a whole lot of that going on- Lets say that it was posted that all who attend the event and wear a red shirt, they will get an extra ticket. All that don’t wear a red shirt, won’t get the ticket. Out of 100(e.g) people who attend the event, how many do you think would wear a red shirt to the event?

My hope, in future WGA events, is that there well be a special & separate drawing for temps. Problem solved. Those who chose to play can find temps to their hearts content.

    TOPIC DONE

A seperate drawing with seperate prizes would probably work. Unfortunatly, all the prizes would come from the same pool. How the prizes are divided between the seperate drawings would then become a bone of contention.

I contacted every geocaching related vendor that I could find to solicit donations for the Picnic raffle. A handful responded and gratiously donated about $250 worth of merchandise. Had I known that this would cause so much angst among so many attendees, I certainly would not have bothered.

    #1887243

    Another great idea.

How about everyone who attends gets one ticket. NO BONUSES for anyone

    Completely level playing field.

Then see how many actually go and find the temps as there is no bonus or reason to. Maybe this would be a good way to phase out the placement of temps at a WGA event completely.

I can see placing ones for the kids. or one or two as examples for new cachers (like a training field) but beyond that how about at the next event, there are no temps placed???

It should be tried once and see what happens.

    #1887244

I hate to even get into this again but…

    its not about the temps

the temporary placements, IMHO, are put out to showcase the state park or facility that the WGA is holding the event at. They are also a way to be creative beyond what would be survivable in the field as permanent caches.
again, my opinion, I could be wrong.

Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.

I have always thought the WGA is at fault for this long drawn out argument. I believe if they do not allow for the logging of temp caches at events they should not place temp caches at events. If they place temp caches at events they should allow the logging of temp caches. Instead they try to do both and the argument continues.

At the Lake Wissota and High Cliff Events cachers in the applicable host area went in and added new permanent cache and in my opinion both events didn’t need additional caches

But I dont think this issue will ever go away, regardless to what side you are on, until the WGA decides to quit playing both sides of this issue

I really don’t want to reply to these threads anymore but am going to one more time.

The temp caches are an event activity. They are not a permanent geocache you log on geocaching.com. Pretty simple.

The WGA is not “playing things both ways”.

The idea both labrat and I contributed was having a token prize for finishing a certain number of temp caches which rewards all who do the temp caches rather than having a “separate drawing” for those who do the temp caching activity. Say everyone who finishes the temp caching activity gets a new LED flashlight for instance. Even better would be a LED flashlight with the WGA logo on it. 🙂

Why can’t completing an event activity result in getting something?

For the life of me, I still cannot understand why.

Obviously there are some who feel that because the activity is hunting a temporary cache, that it makes it a big controversial issue. Like has been said in these threads already, if the activity is something like sack racing and everyone who participated received something, no one would be arguing.

-cheeto- Thank you for responding despite the fact that you didn’t really care to. You asked a very good question in your post… ‘Why can’t completing an event activity result in getting something?’ Folks like to win things, plain and simple. So, for completing an event activity and giving a prize (flashlight, pen, coin, whatever) or having a raffle/drawing for completing said event activity is a great idea. I do not think you will have much opposition with this idea.

Correct me if I am wrong here, but I believe the issue was not with ‘getting a prize for completing an event’ – the issue occurred with COMBINING completing an event with a general raffle drawing, giving those that completed an event an ‘unfair’ advantage over those that chose not to participate in the event.

The issue was not with the concept of having temp caches at the event. Any geocaching event is going to have any number of activities going on. Let there be temp caches at the event. Let there be burlap sack races. Let there be a whoever wears a red shirt contest. Let there be a general ‘for being in attendance’ raffle. Have a scavenger hunt. Have bingo cards. Have whatever type of activity you would like to have at the event. Have prizes for all of them. General door prize = raffle/prize – Temp cache hunt = completely separate prize – Burlap sack race = completely separate prize.

If there are prizes given away or drawings held for the activities, I think the concept is simple here… keep ’em separated.

Brian, thank you again for your hard work in obtaining donated door prizes for the Lake Wissota event. It was, and remains, very much appreciated. Apparently, no good deed goes unpunished. But we cannot let that dissuade us from future good deeds, can we?

I know that the people who actually attended the event enjoyed the prize giveaway. I also know that the guidelines for the raffle were published in these forums a month prior to the event, were published in the event’s booklet and were generally well known and received by all in attendance. I also know that no one offered an alternative prior to the event, and that no one actually at the event complained about the system used. Honestly, it baffles me why some want to make it an issue in January about an event that was held in September.

I am not sure we will be able to have a raffle again. I thought it was fun, though I didnt win anything either. Those who want to have input into whether we have a raffle at the spring campout or not, and how it should best be done are very welcome to participate in the the Campout Committee. That is the appropriate forum for this discussion, and it will be discussed by that committee in March and April leading up to the campout in May.

Zuma, I guess me thanking you at the event for making temp caches count wasn’t direct enough. I apologize now if you took it as thanks as opposed to the sarcastic comment that is was

Now why can’t you have a raffle? I go to many different banquets year.
There is a the general door prize raffle and then many other raffles. I could care less if there was a raffle if you found X# of temps.

One Banquet has 4 gun Boards with 5 guns each on them. Each Board is a different ticket. So you have to chose if you want to buy a chance on a particular board.

It wasn’t till it was brought up in the canidates forum that I started thinking about it. I didn’t win anything at the picnic either and I don’t care if I did or not. The same amount of tickets should have been given to all those that attened. The Geo-bingo is fun. It’s a chance to meet other cachers And I would think that 98% of the people filled out the whole card.
I wish could explain face to face with everyone that been reading this why I brought it up. My typing skills suck and I do not always able to write they way I want to be heard.
So now I will be known as the guy who killed WGA raffles. Again, my beef is not about finding temps. The issue I have is that it was not fair to be exclude for not finding a temp cache. I thought that the new series of caches that Zuma put out were great as were the older caches that were there. I had a great time with Trekin and Elf Doc. and that’s what was important to me.Because I do not get that area, I chose to hunt the perms. When I went to the Borson event, I chose to hunt the perms and not the temps.

I think there a few simple solutions here. They just need to be figured out.

Wow, I moved to Wisconsin from Maryland at the end of July. In Maryland we have plenty of geocaches, but most cachers with “big numbers” are in the 2-3 K range.

Now I move to Wisconson and I’m seeing people with way more than that.

    My thoughts:

You have less weather/ ground conditions per year to legit find caches.

You don’t have more caches per sq mile than MD and the surrounding states (unscientific analysis).

Multiple logging of temp caches?! OH, Now I Get IT!!!!

I’m satisfied with my numbers – give me a break with the argument. Log once and then move on.
