I just received contact from the National Forest Service regarding geocaches in Wilderness Areas. While they do not have a formal policy at this time, they are asking that you avoid designated wilderness areas for your geocache placements. At present, we do not have adequate mapping tools to tell you when you are in one of these areas, so there is a chance that you will get your cache published and then have it archived due to a request from the government. If, however, you know that your area is a designated wilderness area, please contact the forest service for permission before submitting your cache.
This might help.
That is a good map to see. I see that all of the areas are up north, which is what I expected to see.
Thanks for the link, Tom. That list also includes two that are not covered by this announcment. Gaylord Nelson Wilderness is administered by the NPS, which requires formal permission for geocaches, and the Wisconsin Islands Wilderness is managed by the USFWS.
