I could not find any forums using a search to answer this question.
Do you disable your hides during the winter if they are not winter friendly? On the other hand do you just put up the not winter friendly attribute and let cachers decide for themselves?
I have a few hides that are definitely not winter friendly and am curious what I should do as we are heading into our first winter as geocachers.
12/07/2009 at 1:56 am #1917723We find quite a few in the winter, even if they are not winter friendly. We like it when the owner leaves it up to the cacher.
TE12/07/2009 at 2:01 am #1917724If the hides will be dangerous in the winter, you might want to disable them.
Otherwise, just leave them and let cachers decide if the want to try them. Just make sure if the caches are definitely not winter friendly, you make that very clear on the cache page, maybe even saying why: That nano will be covered when the snowplows go by; The container will be frozen solid in ice; or even just, Go ahead and look, but don’t complain if you can’t find it–we told you!
12/07/2009 at 2:03 am #1917725I leave mine up, there are two I’ve since found that the roads don’t get plowed to but if a cacher is determined they can still get there. I’m not sure what the guidelines are for the approvers but you may have to do something so they don’t get archived on accident(?).
12/07/2009 at 2:22 am #1917726We have 1 that we disable for winter. A second is pretty hard in winter, and that one is at cachers discretion.
I’ve seen a film cannister under a rock at the end of a dead end industrial park that is listed as Winter Friendly. Last year, there was about 30 feet of snow on top of it (as well as the rock)!
To answer your question…put on another cachers snowboots and do what you would like to do! 😉12/07/2009 at 2:23 am #1917727All hides are available in the winter, it just is a matter of how bad you want to find them. Our cache totals per month stay at about the same level even in the winter. Once you start finding winter caches you’ll find it’s very rewarding. I’ve cached on the snowmobile during a blizzard (not recommended) and have great memories of that. Snowshoes and a variety of different winter apparel make things easy and comfortable for us. The only caches that I see disabled for winter around here are in parks and other areas that are actually closed for the winter.
12/07/2009 at 2:33 am #1917728Sweet!!! thanks for the quick replies, keep them coming.
I am positive we are going to love caching in the winter, as it is our favorite time of year. Just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing.
12/07/2009 at 3:38 am #1917729I just shut one down for the winter. I think it will be dangerous on some of the stages for a multi I have so down it went. Other than that I leave them up even if they will be covered by snow. That is the enviroment we have chosen to live in. Each cacher will decide if they want to play in the snow and ice!
12/07/2009 at 4:10 am #1917730Every cache is findable in winter, somehow, and danger is relative. I say deep them active.

12/07/2009 at 5:05 pm #1917732Neenah it is! 😀
You must have found that one!(in a snowless season!) 😉
12/07/2009 at 5:12 pm #1917733I think that attribute is a red herring on that one.
On the Left Side of the Road...12/07/2009 at 9:50 pm #1917734I’d really like to hear what different people consider the “available in winter” icon and the text “winter friendly” to mean when they include them on their cache page.
?12/07/2009 at 10:38 pm #1917735I’m taking Friday off to go in search of those with the Winter Icon….I hope to pull in about 30ish….and a few 5 Stars along the way…
…I sure hope the ones marked with the snowflake are accurate and findable in the snow.
