Presently we have 108 active Earthcaches in Wisconsin, I have started to cataloge by Delorme page and County they are in. Before I get too involved with this process I have two questions:
    1) Would you have interest in a Wisconsin Counties or Wisconsin Delorme Earthcache Challenge?
    2) Many areas do not have Earthcaches in them, would you have interest in developing or helping develop caches those areas?

Presently I am leaning toward the idea of a County Challenge and hope to have a list of counties that do not have Earthcaches in them with in the next few days. If I decide to try a Counties Challenge I would like to see if we can get some people to fill in the blank spots

Either a county or Delorme EC Challenge would be fun, and is a good idea.

One issue would be that it may not be possible to place an EC in Menonomie County, since the entire county is reservation land.

I am not familiar with this particular tribe, but it may be worth trying to contact them about doing something like this as they may be open to it. I have a few (physical) caches that are hidden on a reservation up here. I approached the tribal chair and he thought it was a great way to bring people out to the reservation and was very open to it. As long as you aren’t trying to do something near any cultural areas that particular tribe may be approachable on it. Now, I must admit that I do work for the tribe up here (Hannahville Potowatomi), but I have found that a lot of our tribal members enjoy having visitors to the reservation and are looking ways to get people to come visit the main reservation (ie, off the highway and not just the casino).

I have 2 new EC’s in the cue this week that hopefully get published in time for the Waukesha Winter JanBoree. I am now working on the write up for 3 in Vilas and Oneida counties.

We also have the Ice Age Trail folks who are very interested in seeing more EC’s along the trail .. perhaps that could be considered here too.

We’re hoping to have one at Cave of the Mounds, but getting through all those hoops is a long process. We overcome one hurdle so far, have about 3-4 more to go.

My one bit of doubt about a project like this is……will we end up having a bunch of EarthCaches “just because?” I mean, if they’re out there, we’ll do them, but I am a bit concerned that too many “just because” ones will result in ECs going the way of the virtuals. If you do it, counties might give folks a little more space to breathe and look for ones that are truly unique locations. Some of those pages on the DeLorme are really little.

Just my thoughts. We’re also hoping to place on a Devil’s Lake, but since *someone* deleted my waypoints, it will require a return trip before I can proceed any more with that one. Argh!

Renae, I actually like the idea of an Ice Age Trail challenge even better. It allows those who follow it to see the variation and range of that glacial edge. Every time we do a cache along the trail, it’s a marvel.

My thought is the EarthCache will not go the way of the virtual. With Earthcache.org and what is needed to set up an Earthcache I think will perserve them. This being said I agree we must look at quality as opposed to quantity.
Most counties could have multiple locatison within it that would have the ability to place an EC, I know that some counties do not have any in them know and I would recommend that if we pursue this we try to place the best possiable EC in those counties.
Regarding the IAT, I know most of AuniteNae’s are near the IAT but I do not know where about this state it streches but it is certainly an idea that could be explored

The Ice Age Trail folks had a map of the exisiting and possible new sites last time we met. I have an email out asking if they had it in a possible format that could be posted here. It would be great if we could help them get their project rolling along which would in turn help get some new and different EC’s across the state.

And no, my two new ones are not Springs but 1 is water related.

I have 4 new ones done: 2 STILL waiting for permissions, 1 waiting for waypoint coords and 1 in need of a proper verification question….three different counties are represented……if they ever manage to get listed.

(two water related—no springs—one glacial feature and one rock feature)

Okay this is a unofficial breakdown by counties and the number of EC’s, if a county is not listed there are none:
    Ashland-9
    Bayfield-4
    Brown-2
    Buffalo-3
    Calumet-1
    Clark-1
    Columbia-1
    Dane-4
    Dodge-2
    Door-4
    Douglas-1
    Dunn-3
    Eau Claire-1
    Fond du Lac-2
    Iowa-2
    Iron-3
    Jefferson-2
    Langlade-1
    Manitowoc-4
    Marathon-1
    Marinette-1
    Marquette-1
    Milwaukee-10
    Outagamie-1
    Ozaukee-2
    Pierce-3
    Polk-1
    Sauk-4
    Sheboygan-3
    Taylor-1
    Vernon-2
    Walworth-7
    Washington-3
    Waukesha-17
    Winnebago-1

35 counties out of 72-I think we can do this. I know Lost by 7 mentioned 1 county he is trying to get so we could be halfway.

Borrowing an idea from the Montana DeLorme Challenge: They only require that you find all the pages that actually have a cache. Right now they have two pages out of 75 that don’t. This way you could get the challenge up and running rather than losing steam before 37 new ECs could be published. It can be tweaked, but still somewhere to start.

    Very good idea HB,
Honestly I was surprised as to how many counties are represented and actually I was surprised by a few that we not already established. Vilas (which Lost By 7 is working on ) and La Crosse are two that come to mind

Other thing is if there are cachers in some of the counties that do not have EC that would be willing to help with getting cordinates and intell maybe some of us could aide in writing the EC for those counties if those cachers in those counties are not interested.
After all you dont need to be near the location of an EC, after all my nearest one I wrote is roughly 300 miles away

I am working on 2 in LaCrosse, 1 in Vilas and 2 in Oneida counties .. took time to get all the permissions in place, now just to write up and submit.

The two in Vilas county have just been approved by the forest folks and have been submitted. 😛

EDIT: Well the good news is they were both submitted, the bad news is that Auntienae and I had the exact same spot picked out for one of the listings. She has added additional information on parking coords and offered other help on the one listing and will get thanks on the cache page for that. I would like to publicly thank her for offering additional information on the site once she found out I had just submitted it. I feel horrible about the disappointment my listing must have caused 😕 I’m hoping hers will still be able to go though as I think she may have had a different approach to the EC listing.

Who would think we’d both be working on the same spot several hundred miles from our homes. 🙄

I wanted to say Thanks to Everybody for their input. I honestly didn’t know if we could do something like this but it seems I need to find a spot for a ammo can in the near future.

Of course I will have to find someplace that a EarthCache could go to tie it in to the theme (maybe place an EC and the cache near each other).

In the meantime I have to go get six to get my Gold Status (which I will do on Saturday depending on the snow) and I will get to writing up some for those counties we are missing.

Thanks Again your help and input is greatly appreciated!!
