Answers to FAQs:
- The calculator is written in PHP and draws from a MySQL database. If you’re a programmer and want to give it a shot, I can send the files to you, however they are very lightly commented, and the class that actually does the GPX file parsing will make your eyes water.
I’m definately interested in the PHP / MySQL code. As a programmer this intrigues me and it gives me an idea for a few other possible caches / tools for the cache placing community at large.
06/11/2010 at 8:01 pm #1930688I would be greatful to anyone fixing the calculator. I found it extremely useful and easy to use. The Delorme was going to be one of my projects this summer.
06/11/2010 at 8:23 pm #1930689Perhaps if someone can figure out how to get the online calculator working we could somehow figure out if it could be incorporated into the WGA website? Might be worth pitching to the website committee and Board of Directors? This might be a service the WGA could provide back to the community and give it a more “permanent home”. Just a thought here.

Oddly enough, I sent a pm asking that very question…

Great minds think alike? 😉
06/11/2010 at 10:29 pm #1930692I had the same thought, but my only issue with the idea is that we currently have only one person with the access/ability to make install/change/maintain the PHP files. I think his plate is full.
06/12/2010 at 2:31 am #1930693Thanks for all the responses! I know who is going to adopt the cache, pending him deciding if/where he can move it.
And to take the thread back off-topic: Many DeLorme owners have said the same thing: They would log the cache if they became eligible to find it. The goal of the challenge is not really to find the final, but the journey in qualifying for it, so if the owner makes the effort to travel around the state, they’ve earned it.
06/12/2010 at 2:35 am #1930694Moving out of the Racine Area? NOOOOOOOOO!
Oh who am I kidding? I’m a year or 2 of hard caching away from finding the final anyways. Actually it might be kind of a blessing. It’ll get that cache of my nearest to home. 😉

I’d be willing to take a stab it at the code. We could temporarily put it someplace else perhaps linking to it and then once it’s deemed worthy / acceptable, move it to the WGA website.
I’ve done a fair amount of web design work in the past and there are always ways to create sub-sites for testing and then migrate changes to production. To date the WGA has done a great job keeping things up a running and I know that takes a ton of work. I also know we have some great talent in programmers (not just me) in the WGA that might be able to spot the 5 minute fix that’s needed to make this work again.
06/13/2010 at 1:58 am #1930696OK….so Sweetlife is adopting this, or not?? You said that you found a way to verify through GSAK, but will it have the nifty utility that we can use too that shows which pages we’ve completed? If not, my hubby said that he’d look at the code and see what might need to be done to modify it. (No promises here, but he is pretty much a computer geek!)
06/13/2010 at 2:00 am #1930697OK, dummy…..look at page TWO of the thread rather than stopping after page one. Sigh! Ignore my stupid comments in the previous posting.

Above is the link to the Macro for GSAK to see if you have completed the challenge
06/20/2010 at 9:43 pm #1930699adoption yes i would be willing to do it I have completed the this one back in September let me know what do next.
06/21/2010 at 4:08 am #1930700Ok, just so no one else gets all wound up. I was fortunate enough to be the first to get a message to Dave and have decided to take it. At this point all I’m waiting on is the adoption link to get things going. To answer a few questions I think will come up:
Will it move? Yes. If things go as I’d like, the cache will remain temp disabled and be moved to the Wausau area in the next 3 weeks. But there are still a couple of details to work out about the move.
What about the calculator? At the moment if you have questions whether you are done or not it’ll be a manual process and several email exchanges between us to get it figured out.
What else? I have exchanged messages with a lot of people and that has spawned a lot of good ideas. Besides getting moved to wausau there are other things in the works for it that I’m sure someone will complain about but hopefully the majority will like.
06/21/2010 at 2:24 pm #1930701One thought on the calculator. There is a website out there, http://www.mygeocachingprofile.com, which has several Delorme challenge maps on it, but not Wisconsin. I suspect they would be glad to add us if we asked them, and I have the coordinates of the grid if you don’t. Of course, we can’t require people to use this, but I think most people would prefer this to doing it manually.
