I suspect this has been hashed over before by old members and previous boards but I would like to know if there is a good reason for not allowing anyone that would care to join our organization to do so.
I currently belong to several other state’s organizations and am able to participate in all aspects of those organizations EXCEPT elections. That is perfectly acceptable to me as I believe the “locals” will have a better handle on who directs the business of that respective organization. I personally think that model could work for our organization as well. DB

As I understand it Gary, consensus is that if nonresidents are allowed membership status, that all the nonresident members will combine there voting ability as a sign of solidarity and vote to disband the WGA and subsequently vote to assign the Association’s finances to support Al Queda cells in Winona and Fillmore Counties in SE Minnesota.

The powers that be did see fit to allow us to assign our own little monikers, hence throwing this monkey a banana to get him to stop squawking. 🙄

I’m afraid don’t get your question. Anybody from outside WI is welcome to join and fully participate in everything our organization does, except elections.

Is this more confusion about “Member” vs. “Friend” again? Friends ARE WGA members in every way except they can’t vote in the election or run for the Board. Giving them the Friend designation in their profile just enables us to see in our membership database who is eligible to vote and who isn’t. And it’s not just people from out of state – it is underaged members as well. So how is that different from what you want?

I do not understand the question either.

WGA is just like our neighbors to the south, GONIL. I am a member of GONIL but since I live in Wisconsin, I am not able to vote on GONIL elections.

This almost sounds like a re-visit of a previous post?

I was just replying to the posting. Sorry, I didn’t realize that I wasn’t authorized to do that either.

p.s. Thanks for the banana! 😀

The confusion I have, and most of those posting replies also seem to have, is that to be a MEMBER of Wisconsin Geocaching Association one must be a resident of the state of Wisconsin according to the organization bylaws,
“Wisconsin resident. Your permanent residence must be in the state of Wisconsin.”
This is not true of many of the other GC organizations.
The only difference should be, from my point of view, you are a MEMBER, or a VOTING MEMBER, if you reside in Wisconsin.
All members have the same organizational rights and responsibilities except for voting members vote and hold organization office.
I believe this is true for New York and Minnesota as examples only.
Time to update and upgrade the bylaws in my opinion.
      The “Friends” designation is lame.

Again, it is just a name. But if you have to have “Member” it is real easy. come live in the state.

So what you are wanting is the Board to go and change the bylaws so that the current term FRIEND becomes MEMBER and the current MEMBER becomes VOTING MEMBER because a couple people don’t like the FRIEND designation due to a perceived “lameness”. Do I have this correct?

Monikers are over rated … but I do like bananas.

Now why didn’t I think of that? ❓

I believe at least one individual is starting to understand my perspective. May not agree with it but………………………..

      Just FYI, “
Member: Part of an aggregate or a whole; one of the persons composing a society, community, or the like.”
“Friend: One who has esteem and regard for another and his society. One who looks with favor upon a cause, institution, or the like.”

Sorry, “Friend” is like a second class citizen.

Members up front, Friends to the back of the bus.

Amen Brother… oops I forgot, I’m not allowed to respond to posts as it relates to this subject.

      Sorry.

      p.s. Thanks for the banana!

Quite frankly, I’m a little shocked that you would consider friend to be a pejorative term. Rather than look at dictionary definitions, why not look at the by laws and read how a WGA Friend is defined? Personally, I’m happy to be a friend to as many people as possible, but maybe that’s just me…
