When my kids behave this way, I tell them to grow up and get over it. Unless you want to be able to vote or sit on the board, what does it matter to you? The designation of friend or member and $1.25 will get you fries at McDonalds. The organization or club gets to make the rules. If you don’t like them, there is nothing forcing you to belong. If Minnesota and New York are organizations that you admire – join them. Why is it necessary to keep badgering around on this board about it. One of the biggest problems with society today is a minority group wants to change the policies for the whole. I think the straw poll already taken indicates the majority of the members don’t see a need to change. So why do you have to keep pressing the issue? One term I did learn on the GC forums for people who constantly post to be obnoxious are called trolls. Why aren’t you thankful that you have a free resource that you can participate in?

I don’t remember the person that posted this topic as having ever posted on this particular subject before. He’s a member of the WGA and even he can see that this policy doesn’t seem right. As for your reference to a straw poll… I must have missed that one.
I personally had an interest in this topic for a while until I realized that there was some irrational attachment to the status quo. But before assuming that I initiated this topic (this time 😀 ) it is important to understand that DaBloodhound and lagrac are two different people. I’ll take my banana and go find an ammo box.
10/11/2007 at 11:58 pm #1879885You’re missing the point but then you already have a seat in the front of the bus. DB
10/12/2007 at 12:15 am #1879886Sammy,
I will not lower myself to name calling even though you have opened that door.
I’m note sure the entire membership agrees with your point of view. Perhaps only the more vocal ones.
I believe when a member of an organization see an inequality that he or she feels should be righted there is an obligation to point it out to the membership and work to correct it even if folks like yourself have trouble accepting another point of view.
I think we are smaller as an organization for not looking harder at this issue.
Inviting active individuals to join our organization will add only improve our organization as a whole. When is the last time you did anything to benefit the organization or geocachig as a whole?
Thank you, I do belong to the New York and Minnesota geocaching groups.
DB10/12/2007 at 12:52 am #1879887I’m a proud member of the Saskatchewan Geocaching Association (Saskatoon is a fine town) and a member of the Iowa Geocaching Association, but not Wisconsin? That just seems odd, it not as though I ever cache in Wisconsin. On a totally unrelated subject, if you ever get a chance, you should hit Zuma and Da Bloodhound’s Badger State Challenge – 72 Counties. Very Cool!!
10/12/2007 at 12:57 am #1879888This is just a friendly reminder to keep the conversation civil.
Thanks.
10/12/2007 at 3:18 am #1879889Why don’t we just shut down the whole dang site. That way, everyone can be left out and it won’t be a problem. I’m going to throw this out again. I do not know the numbers but here is a guesstimate just for argument sake. I think it’s like 75% or more of the members live in the southeastern part of the state. the majority of the Board members are from that part of the state. WGA events tend to be held in that part of the state. Will there ever be a WGA event north Eau Claire, I’m not holding my breath. Here is a simple solution. When you sign up, claim you live in a town in Wisconsin. Who’s going to know?
We have many people from the Twin Cities that have cabins and 2nd home in this area. They pay property taxes, use the lakes, roads and what not. But when it comes to election time, do they get to vote? No.
Our family has had a cabin in the U.P. of Michigan for over 75 years. Should our family get to vote in the Michigan state election?
If an out -of-stater get a membership tag, what are you going to do with it?
I do not understand what a non- resident gains by becoming a full member other than you get to vote. It’s like the COTM. it has to be a cache in the Badger State. Plain and simple. I do not see why this is being rehashed over and over.
OK. sorry. I’m done venting for now.

This is where I’m confused. You are a member of this site. It’s just that the title says “WGA Friend” instead of “WGA Member”. If we were to change the titles, what else would change except a few words? I fail to see why this is such a hot issue.
Is it the voting thing? I live in Wisconsin, but work and cache in Illinois. As a Wisconsin resident, I do not have the right to vote in Illinois elections, nor am I able to vote in GONIL elections. If issues come up that I’m concerned about, I can certainly make it known on the GONIL boards and hope to sway the board members to my side. I suppose if there were a political issue that affected me I could also contact the representative for the area where I work. But as a Wisconsin resident, that is where my voting rights are limited.
As a Minnesota resident, if you have issues with caching in Wisconsin, please bring them up here. As a board member, I would pay just as much attention to your opinions and concerns as I would to anyone else.
But the way I stand on the issue is that the WGA represents Wisconsin geocachers (vs. people that geocache in Wisconsin) and as such, I have no intention on supporting a change to that statute.
Of course, you fully have the right to find residents who share your opinion, encourage them to run for the board, and if they are elected, change the statute. As it stands with the current board however, while we’re certainly not going to stop discussions about it, unless someone somehow manages to come up with a brilliant argument to change anyone’s minds, it’s a dead issue.
10/12/2007 at 1:09 pm #1879891Well stated Dave.
While I do not understand the strife I do understand that it is an important issue to a few of our geocaching kin. I respect that they are irked by the policy but rehashing it over and over is counter productive in my opinion. All that does is create hostility.
I removed all links to the WGA which I used to feature on all my caches a few years ago due to the fact that at the time there was a lot of bickering on the boards. I did not want to introduce new cachers to such an environment.
I FIRMLY hold that people should have and express opinions but sarcasm and name calling is not appropriate.
[/soapbox]
10/12/2007 at 2:19 pm #1879892OK, discussion over.
I’m going caching.
DB10/12/2007 at 9:05 pm #1879893I find this whole discussion funny. You guys are acting as though I am trying to incite some kind of civil disobedience. I agree, in the past, I did address this topic in a posting, but I didn’t post this topic. There is no need to censor one of your own Members. He is just voicing his opinion. I am also innocent of lobbying this member to post this topic too. I really don’t care anymore, in the past I admit to having talked with one Board Member about this subject, but it was just because I knew that he would be unbiased when it came to making a decision and I respected his opinion. I feel as though every single one of my postings on the WGA forums have been polite. The underlying sarcasm I apologize for, it’s just part of my sense of humor. I lost my original sense some time back as a part of a tragic geocaching accident, so I’m trying to rehabilitate it (unsuccessfully obviously).
In conclusion, I’d just like to tell you how this whole thing reminds me of someone I learned about when I was studying for my Naturalization Test. William Pitt the Elder was an 18th Century British Politician. Many feel as though he was really ahead of his time in his views of the Crown. He is most famous for one of his quotes. Although I’ll refrain from quoting it here, it is amazing to see that his idea is as relevant today as if was in the 1740’s.Thanks for your time and I’m out 😀

You must mean this one:
“The parks are the lungs of London.”
