Would anyone be interested in pitching in for the initial investment required to get custom Wisconsin Geocaching coins minted? Initial cost of 2500 coins would be about $1200. That would include artwork, die charges and production of 2500 coins. Contributors could count on 2 coins for each dollar contributed. They would be great to put in caches.
Orders placed after the initial order would be about 35 cents per coin for orders of 2500 coins. No art charges or die charges to contend with.

04/27/2004 at 8:20 pm #1736969That would be a very good start. If we could get about 10 more folks to do the same, it would be great.
04/27/2004 at 8:46 pm #1736970I think it’s a good idea. Are these going to be numbered?

04/27/2004 at 10:10 pm #1736972Just an FYI. I’ve been in some discussions lately with geocaching.com about WI geocoins. They are more than willing to work with someone to include the geocaching logo on the coin, but at this time, even in a large quantity and even for money per coin, are not interested in making WI geocoins officially trackable. I was planning on trying them back in a few months, until the doors open. So, just like TX geocoins, you’ll have to have a seperate website if you want to actually track them, or purchase a seperate Travel Bug tag to attach to the coin.
04/28/2004 at 12:06 am #1736973Sounds like a great idea.
But then xxxxxxx’s t-shirts did too.
The issues of payment and delivery come to mind.
And, just who is gumbosnow?
He has posted two finds today and then this idea.
I think I may need more selling.

04/28/2004 at 3:28 am #1736974I just looked at the Texas Geocoins. They went for a much higher-end coin than I was imagining. My thoughts were aluminum coins, just like Mardi Gras Doubloons (non-trackable). More like souvenir trinkets for caches rather than the travel bug concept.
04/28/2004 at 3:32 am #1736975For those folks that are wondering who I am, I will share some info. I am an adult student at Marian College (Appleton branch). I am earning my teaching certificate. My wife is a teacher also and some of her friends introduced us to geocaching last fall. We went out twice and did not find the caches, but enjoyed ourselves. Winter came and we hid indoors. Monday night, my professor took the whole class geocaching. We found two, so I logged them.
As for money and coins, I was hoping WiGeocaching would facilitate the money handling or some other trusted setup. I understand not wanting to send money to an anonymous internet identity.
04/28/2004 at 12:31 pm #1736976I think it would be fun to swap and trade.
We will be seeing more and more of then in the near future.04/29/2004 at 2:11 am #1736977If anyone is interested in seeing what I am talking about, go to this link…
04/29/2004 at 11:10 am #1736978Perhaps I should have welcomed Gumbosnow into our community before I be gan playing devil’s advocate. Welcome Gumbosnow. I am sure you will find that I am not always so skeptical. I am sure that your intentions are very good.
Those of us who are through our first several months have probably considered signature items and geocoins already. We, or at least Trudy & I have taken a serious look at the scale, price, purpose and projected return of such a venture and selected a more prudent route. If this is something you really want to do, go for it. But, at least take a look at a Franklin balance sheet first.
04/29/2004 at 11:38 am #1736979Thanks for the Welcome. I am happy to be participating in this sport and this forum.
Franklin Balance Sheet
What are the good points?
They are unique items to place in caches
The ‘per piece’ cost is less than many trinkets placed in a cache
They could travel the world and start a trend
They would make a cool key chainThe bad points…
Costs money
Requires cooperation of several people
Spousal hostilitiesI’m sure the list could go on, but this is a good start. I also have an alternative if not enough care to go this route, but this is a more desirable end product.

My reference was to the shakey service we got from a vendor we were so eager to support in the past. While we got the t’s they were late in delivery and the sizes were miscounted. These were issues of reliability.
