Not sure if there will be a 2010 WI coin or not. If the new BOD decides to do it, put out a design contest, vote on it by the membership, get it produced and shipped, it might be 2011.
But the point of this post is design. We found a Minnesota coin in a cache in Neenah, and just a quick glance told you it was from the MnGA, because the coin was shaped like the State of Minnesota, as well as being a shiny gold coin! I’m sure a few others have seen this coin, as well. I believe Marc 5 digits has it now.
We (JimandLinda) would like to see a Wisconsin coin stamped out with the shape of the State of Wisconsin. I mentioned it to zuma today at the LCG Event, and thought I would throw it out there to get the creative coin artrists going on it.
Just my opinion, but we have a state with a very recognizable shape, too. To see it in gold coin would be a treat! (The 2007 Compass Rose is still our favorite coin!)Any other ideas?

Do we need to wait until after the elections to get this going or is this something the current BOD can get started?01/24/2010 at 10:33 am #1920875@Team Black-Cat wrote:

I also like Jim’s idea for a state shaped, but of course, at this point we should be open to all ideas and see what great ideas are out there.

01/24/2010 at 3:00 pm #1920876Poll results thus far:
Should the WGA produce and sell a new geocoin in 2010?
Yes 78% [ 44 ]
No 3% [ 2 ]
Maybe 7% [ 4 ]
No Opinion 10% [ 6 ]While the results are positive, this is a very small percentage of our members who have spoken.
Looking at the most recent WGA coin process, it looks like it was started in April (at least “publicly” started.. I’m sure it was started before this within the BOD) If I am not mistaken, starting in April resulted in coins shipping “just in time for Christmas”. I could be wrong but I think I remember that.
We talked about the coin in the shape of our state in our gathering at the Wet Maze cache when Jim also shared this idea. I really liked this idea as well.
However, as been stated before the design should be left to the members and our proven process. The BOD could recommend the state shaped coin as a design option for those design submitters to start from.
01/24/2010 at 5:32 pm #1920877One idea to add to this, I dont know how much we do in coin sales outside of Wisconsin (A board member could help here), but I know that South Carolina, Minnesota and Utah all make their coins in two metals.
The first metal would be whatever the majority of the organization prefers and that metal alone is shipped to in state members. The second metal (call it the second place finisher) is then sold to whatever in state member would want is and to anybody out of state.
From when I had our coin made I seem to remember had we want one portion done in one metal and another in a different metal there was no additional cost unless it was a premium metal01/25/2010 at 9:52 pm #1920878Hello from Texas! (I’m a native Cheesehead)
As longtime board member of the Texas Geocaching Association and former coin maker I highly recommend making two variations of a coin, one limited edition coin for WI residents and the other for non-residents. The resident coins always go fast in our Texas sales.
Just my 2 cents. 🙂
01/25/2010 at 10:32 pm #1920879Do you charge differently for the LEs? It’s a cool idea.
02/07/2010 at 5:42 am #1920880We would love to get one. We also like the idea of having it in the shape of Wisconsin.
02/07/2010 at 6:15 pm #1920881I’m generally not a GC collector, but I think it’s a great idea and would get one. Just to be clear, are we talking about a 2010 coin or a 2011 coin?
Also, has there ever been a theme for past coins? I know a lot of annual item design contests (i.e. posters, events, etc.) have a theme for the year. While having a theme would require a decision to be reached on what it would be, it does make the decision process of choosing the winner easier because you are basing it not only on the design, but how well it fits the theme. It also gives the potential designers an area to focus. (ex: 2010 theme – “CITO/EarthDay 40th Anniversary” or “Wild Wisconsin”; 2011 theme idea – “10 years of WI caching”)
Just a thought. Putting it out there for discussion.
02/08/2010 at 4:10 am #1920882how about something with are wisconsin bike trails since they usually are packed with caches.
bug line/glacial drumlin/ice age etc maybe with the state of wisconsin as the coin with different color bike lines in there according places on the sate.02/08/2010 at 6:05 pm #1920883Be neat to put a collage of sports for each season on one side, and not just shovel and swat :>
A snowmobile, fishing rod, ski’s, bicycle, atv, pine tree( 😀 ) ….
02/08/2010 at 6:51 pm #192088402/08/2010 at 7:02 pm #1920885maybe one side of the state coin could represent wisconsin winter activities and the other wisconsin summer activities.
02/08/2010 at 9:45 pm #1920886With the 10th anniversary of geocaching coming up, what about a regional coin?
MN/MI/WI/IA/IL/IN all have state outlines, that lock into each other for a big icon / logo on one side, and state specific info on the reverse.

FYI – there are already 2 other known Geocoin projects regarding the 10th anniversary of geocaching. One being done by Groundspeak and the other by the folks organizing all the 10th anniversary events.
Based on many of the posts here and elsewhere, it would be cool to have a WI shaped coin minted in more than one finish with the coolest finish for members only.
I also like the idea of a Wisconsin-based theme for the design submissions. I just don’t think we should incorporate the 10th anniversary theme. Leave that to the others.
My 2 cents… I have never created a geocoin so it really is just 2 cents.
