Again….we are not the only state that log temp. caches.

Again, my simple solution is this…for (all states, not just Wisconsin) events that have temp. caches, the cache page should be set up and given the options that a CITO event page has. There you have an option to say you “attended” the event. Then you have the option to say, “you found it,” meaning you found a temp. cache…. Then you can keep straight the number of events you attended vs. the number of temp. caches you found at the event/s.

I know I’m repeating myself here ( I explained it under this thread a few months back)…..but I believe this would be an easy solution.

Don’t worry you can repeat it again in a few months after the picnic 😉

    …round and round we go……wheeeeeeeeeeee ➡

My solution is that the infrastructure is already in place for Additional Waypoints for caches (i.e. parking coordinates). Why not add in a “Temp Cache” type of waypoint that can be used for events? The biggest change is that they’d have to provide a way to log them.

They wouldn’t even need to be added into your grand total. If you’ve found any benchmarks, that total is listed on your stats page, it’s just not added into your find total. I’d be very happy with that.

Oh…so it “is about the numbers!”

How can you compare finding a temp. cache placed in a huge state park to finding a permanent bench mark?

As I recall at the awesome WGA campout, my family hunted caches from 8:30am to 10:30pm (with a 5:00pm meeting break…actually I went out then to plant my night cache) and we found all of the temp. caches placed for the event including some permanent caches. We hiked 17+ miles, and we are not suppose to get a “smiley” for them/temp caches??????

    Tami

I knew somehow this would tie into the “numbers.”

I’m not comparing the two… What I’m saying is that GC.com lets you “find” benchmarks (even though they aren’t caches) and will even show you the total on your stats page. I’d like to be able to have something similar for temps. Have some way to officially list them on the site (since you currently can’t list caches that are not permanent) so you can actually log each temp cache as what they are, and not just as multiple attended logs on the event cache page. I could see how many I’ve found on my stats page, but like benchmarks, they just wouldn’t count towards my total finds.

As for your other point, let me put my flame-proof suit on first…

I know you guys are great cachers and I commend you on finding all the temps. I hope you had a great day caching with your family and enjoyed yourselves. But why must every box found in the woods absolutely equate to a smiley on GC.com? I found a letterbox in a park near my home. There’s no site to log those finds, so should I post a Found It on some other cache to get credit for my effort in finding it?

Holy cow! I can smell the smoldering remains of Dave from my home!!

Hey Tami, I like my steak medium.

I posted a similar compromise on the Groundspeak forums last year. It was completely ignored of course.

      Folks,

It’s our game. All are welcome to play by the same rules. Don’t let others p… on our campfire, add more fuel and watch them really start to burn.

This argument has been going on for six years now, and I see no resolution. So, let them rant. Keep on doing what your are comfortable with and enjoy the game. ~tb

It’s almost amusing to watch how crabby some people get over things that are going on a thousand miles away that have absolutely zero impact on their lives.

What are the other states stances on BONUS finds? Why not just place one new permanent cache for each event as close to the event as possible? Place a code word inside. Come to the event and present the code word to obtain the coords for the event temps. Go find the temps and log them as bonus finds under the permanent. You still get to log that you attended the event. You get one additional permanent and you get to log all of the temps as bonus finds under a cache with a GC#.

You would not need to present the code word to obtain the event cache coords, but by finding the permanent cache; you’d have another logging option.

      Just throwing out ideas here…

Now THAT is the best idea I have heard in a while. Or just make it one REALLY big multi…. Although everyone would still grumble because the “stages” wouldn’t be permanent. Might shut them up for a while though and get “them” to stop looking at our event caches.

If Jeremy (head honcho over there at GC.COM) wanted this practice stopped, he would have by now put a limit on logging an event. One event, one log – you would not be able to log it multiple times. He has not done that. He changed the web pages, big time and could have added or taken away that feature, he did not.

I also feel that a separate category for temp finds should be added to the cache event page. The whole temp cache idea, I think, was not allowed from day one due to worry over geotrash being left after events, etc… I do not believe that happens. Temp caches I have done have been, creative (new ideas tried out), many are handicap accessible and close together – easier to find for those with disabilities, and hidden in places where normally people were not allowed to place caches before, i.e. in state parks prior to DNR regulation changes. I believe this game, sport whatever you want to call it has evolved since it’s inception. New and creative ways to hide things and find things are coming out all the time. This is just another way to “play the game” in my book and I don’t care if someone has logged 2,000 temp caches or not. It won’t change the way I play. Do the people who log these or have high numbers get some sort of multimillion dollar prize for the most found – nope – so who cares? I’ll tell you who cares, some guy in CA with nothing better to do than raise his BP and nose around in everybody’s bizness when he out to get out there and find some caches. 🙄 sheesh okay done with that now, back out to the skeeters, mud and poison ivy to have some real fun…

Pffft . . . Criminal is just a blowhard purist who is too rigid with his thinking and so myopic with his view that he is easily dismissed. Just shows ya that some peoples lives are sooo disinteresting that they are forced to look at other peoples activities to make it through the day lol. I picture him alone at the computer late at night paging through and policing events, the guy seriously needs a life, or a different hobby that is less stressful, like maybe checkers or something.

        Checkers!
Checkers would be perfect … as you go through all that work, winning all those playing pieces, but you only get to count it as winning ONE game.

I agree with Dave, why must every container equal a smiley??

We as a team have decided to not log temps, and even try to avoid events with temps, everyone should attend a event up in the UP of michigan, NO TEMPS, just a few hours of chatting and coin trading, some door prizes, and some time before or after to hunt for the caches in the area that have REAL smileys attached to them.
