I don’t need to log them and I don’t need a contest to entice me to attend a WGA event.

06/08/2007 at 2:20 pm #1769187Would I attend an event if there were no temps? Yes, and I have. Would I attend if there were temps but we weren’t able to log them? Again, yes, but I would NOT be hunting the temps. That would be a waste of time in my opinion.

Me too.
06/08/2007 at 3:02 pm #1769189I seem to be seeing a change in opinion on this practice from where we were two or even one year ago…I wonder if it is time to revisit our policy of allowing temps to be logged at Official WGA events?
06/08/2007 at 3:26 pm #1769190I like the Big Cheese’s idea. Raffles are always fun. There would still be an incentive to hunt the temps for those who need an incentive. Not all of us need an incentive to hunt temps, but anything that makes them more attractive to a broader section of the geocaching community is great. We don’t want to exclude anyone from the fun.
I guess there are a lot of fun things that could be done with the temps, like the previously mentioned poker runs. We just need to think outside the box a bit to make temps something really special.
Those who want to hunt the temps will have the opportunity and those who don’t want to hunt the temps can socialize all they want.
As long as I can still have my cake, brats, beer, cheese, and fun; I’ll be happy.
06/08/2007 at 3:33 pm #1769191Still new to this, but it seems like there should be some reward for the effort that people put into hiding cache. The reward is giving people the chance to find it and comment on it. If the basis is a GC number and a log then I think 3Hawks has the right idea and use bonus caches off a main cache. I have no idea how to do that but it sounds great.
One could always place permanent caches and disable them after the event and finally archive them. What do other states that do not log event caches over and over for temps do?
06/08/2007 at 3:57 pm #1769192time to travel + cost of gas + cost of lodging
If the WGA events no longer offer temp caches we can log and if there are not plenty in the area that I have not found, I would not attend.
Our events offer the opportunity to have some unique hides plus explore areas that there typically have not been caches.
Wisconsin is not unique with temp caches and logging them.
I respect those that do not search temp caches, those that search but do not log them so why can we not also respect those of us that do?
From the events we have planned and implemented, I know very well the work that goes into them.

06/08/2007 at 4:24 pm #1769193When I started out I was all about getting my numbers up but as my numbers climbed I felt funny about logging temps particularly when the powers that be changed the wording of events to “Attended.” So about a year and a half ago I deleted all my temp finds. I had nearly 200 of them.
Admittedly I’m less tempted to go to events now that I no longer log temps…..
But don’t get me wrong, even though I disagree personally with the practice of logging temps I will (and do) defend the practice. But, as I said I wonder if the WGA’s membership is changing opinion on this matter and if so the leadership should access what that change is and act accordingly.
06/08/2007 at 6:29 pm #1769194How about a non-binding referendum on the issue to see what the greater WI caching community thinks.
You can’t keep patching a leaky roof forever. Eventually, you have to tear off what’s there to see and repair the damage.
06/08/2007 at 8:00 pm #1769195When I was “taught” geocaching, it was explained to me that logging temp caches was the accepted practice, and I had no clue that some in the community were indeed offended by it. The temp caches that I have logged have for the most part been every bit as challenging or in some cases, even more challenging than a number of permanent caches. I will never apologize for logging those as finds. I would feel a little silly logging some of the so called pocket caches though. All in all, I say play the game the way you want to. I am not competing with anyone else, just myself. Enjoy your finds, and let others enjoy theirs.

06/08/2007 at 10:19 pm #1769197I started caching this past January and I have logged temp caches from events but I am reconsidering this practice and tettering on the fence and heres why in part:
There is a cache in Joliet, IL GC484C “The Journal” that is a multistaged puzzle that reportedly takes 5-6 hours to complete if all goes well and is over a 10 mile hike in all. This only counts as 1 find and is a 5/5 . I really want to do this cache someday and maybe even get a group and go do it together.
In many ways this reminds me of the WGA campout where I spent at least that many hours out hiking from cache to cache and logged 30 something finds errr “attends”. If I was only allowed 1 find for this I would be ok with that.
I can see both sides of this argument very clearly. I don’t know what side of the fence I will eventually come down on when I stop tettering but I will be able to live with it whatever it may be. Maybe the solution is to have all the temp caches be tied to a new permanent multi cache with expanded stages using the temps. When the event is done leave the permanent multi behind with 2-3-4 stages. 1 attended and 1 find. Just a thought.
06/09/2007 at 1:54 am #1769198I feel that the WGA represents us all and any official events done by them should follow all GC.com current rules and our by-laws. Why teach new members to just “ignore” what others say in regards to temp hides ‘counting as multi attends’.. why not just do it right and place (prior to the event).. some quality perm. caches. When we first placed caches in State Parks, it was under the radar.. now we have a bit more flexibility than we had ‘way back then’.. But after the event, check on each cache to see how much it may have been trampled.. tweak it a bit so that volunteer trails from the event can heal..
I keep hearing that ‘others’ (perhaps meaning other States) are scoring temp hides.. but does anyone actually know how many State Geocaching Assoc. take the stance of ‘you can log them or you don’t have to’?… but to log them you’ll have to do them by hitting “attended” 50 or so times.. why not just get some very creative volunteers to create 10 caches that can take hours to finish.. long hikes, creative multis etc.. which would continue to mentor newer members on how fun spending a few hours on just one cache can be.. Why not recreate/remix some of the ‘famous’ multi caches that others have created. Giving a taste of each of the local area talents into a “taste of Wisconsin’s Best”.. for those that have a limited budget and can’t travel throughout Wisconsin to see the original cache. Make a night cache ( I actually have one at a State Park but it’s still not ‘approved’ because of a mapping mixup of natural areas – but the Manager in the Ranger’s station passes out copies of it to campers & geocachers that he meets… ) Multi caches could intersect with the other caches placed.. giving a great way for groups to meet each other on the trails as they head off in different directions. I would be one to ‘archive’ my cache if the space is needed to allow new Event perm. caches to be hidden nearby to highlight the area.
Just tossing around ideas..
~The Lil OtterI’ll be offline for some weeks.. so if there’s any type of voting.. could one of the staff please put my vote forward.

For whatever reason/s many Wisconsin geocachers do not visit the WGA forums. By having us vote here in the forums, not everyone will be heard.
Whoever wants to know about who would log temp caches, pocket caches, multi attended or just one attended…..look through the following (sample) events to get your answers. I picked these events at random, pick your own if you would like. Just read through the logs and you “do the math.”
