Well I stopped teetering I guess. Yesterday I deleted 50 some temps logs I attended (found). Now I am not going to say this is the right way to go for all, I may even be misguided. I will say that FOR ME; if I am honest with myself and am willing to Drive 170 odd miles to do a multi staged cache that takes 5-6 hours to complete and only get 1 find I should be willing to do that with an event as well as a matter of concious.
06/09/2007 at 2:35 pm #1769202A lot of thoughtful comments. I have a suggestion, because this topic could go on until the end of the world, like thread stealers. There is a word Appeasement. I’m sure the board has been in full discussion on the temp cache topic. I believe it may have been mentioned before by another cacher, is there a way that the board can address GC.com to create a total with and without event cache/temp caches. This way you can know your real gc.com finds vs. your temp finds at an event. Have your cake and eat it too, as I think I’ve read here also. I’ve been tettering on the fence too. I’ve decided an event is an event. It’s put as coordinates on GC.com to get you there, it’s not one giant ammo can where we can all jump in and log it as a find with a smiley and sign the log, it’s an event, although a large ammo can that we can all jump into might be an interesting cache. As a side note to the one eyed man is king…I once knew a blind king who picked up a hammer and saw. 😉

Yes, the board has discussed the topic extensively…this year….last year…
Last year, before I was a board member, I submitted the idea about treating multiple event logs like benchmarks – where they would show up in your profile, but not on the count that appears in other places. Other compromises have been suggested as well. They are always totally ignored. Groundspeak keeps saying that it will not take on the role of the “logging police” so therefore it doesn’t feel like it has to do anything about it, one way or the other.
06/09/2007 at 6:49 pm #1769204I’m one at fault here for being such a ‘crazed’ otter when I was the WGA temp hider board member organizer at Devil’s Lake Picnic years ago.. the conservative board members were so concerned about all the temp hides done there.. I had reasons.. but just imagine the 50-100+ cachers trampling one of the most amazing State Parks with just a few caches to do. Many memories there.. my favorite: bnb’s first temp hide, I tried to mentor her on relaxing and enjoying herself.. finding a fun place to show off..just looking around and feeling her surroundings.. she took hours to place the temps.. she put forth her best… she had made a memory as did I. If I could turn back time now.. (I didn’t know about GC.com’s forum questioning our counts about temps) I’d have done it very differently. Geocaching was a “baby” back then.. we were all helping/mentoring each other and making mistakes as we go. Are we a “child” now or are we “men”?
one of my favorite quotes:
When I was a child, I thought like a child, spoke as a child.. when I became a man, I put away the childish things.Using the phrases.. “others are doing it”.. “I’ve done it before so it’s okay”.. “Just ignore their comments”… “I won’t come if they are not there”..
This just seems a sad way to mentor others in their own growth of the sport.. if one of our own children were saying these things, I’d hope we as parents would step up to the plate..
The simple truth is.. either I’ll be pegged as an “old lady” stuck in the old ways and just rambling on.. or as a “old lady” wishing the best for the ‘children’ of this sport.
Enjoy your Adventures!

Actually, some of us are women. 😉
Always nice to hear some of the historical perspective.

Yes, and those of us who still appreciate the differences, appreciate them (a lot)

;06/13/2007 at 5:35 pm #1769207Check this Indiana event out: “Walk the Walk and ‘Cache On'” (GCMJKY). What are they doing? Those Godless cheaters!!! Lets hang them all!!! Does anyone have some rope?
Wait!!! What about this Kentucky event: “3rd Annual October Fest @ Windy Rock” (GCT5QH)? I think I’m going to be sick….. How could they do this to us?? Have they no morals or ethics. Lets excommunicate them from the caching community, flog them, get them to sign admissions of guilt, and then hang them!!!!
Now that sounds like a party!!!!! We could even make it an official event where we could log each hanging as an attended “event.” 😈 😈
06/14/2007 at 5:47 pm #1769208There are a couple differences, in that those events had fewer temps and fewer attendees. This makes these events seem less excessive to the anklebiters on the GC.com boards than our events. For those interested in the numbers, 93 teams logged at least one “attended” on the cache page, so with 1765 logs and counting we are averaging 19 logs per team.
