The board today passed a motion to revitilize our committee structure. (Full text of the motion can be viewed in the BOD tab.)

The next step is to seek members for each committee, and I encourage all to consider helping the WGA grow by serving on one of our committees.

Here id your chance to participate in the growth of the WGA, by volunteering to assist with one of our 4 committees now seeking members. (We wont be seeking volunteers for the picnic committee until June.)

Campout committee: Members needed now! This committee will plan and work on developing this year’s WGA campout at High Cliff State Park in May.

Community Education committee: This committee works on developing a positive understanding of geocaching among the public and fields requests for training new folks to geocache.

Web committee: This committee works with our web master to develop and maintain our WGA web site.

Membership committee: This committee is new, and is intended to grow membership in the WGA with active geocachers in Wisconsin. Projects that this will hopefully include is the development of “Geocaching 201” type classes and promoting regional events.

Please consider volunteering for one of our open committees. All are empowered committees that will give you a way to give back to the geocaching community.

If you wish to volunteer, either send me an PM or post a note here.

    Thanks.

Since this is a long and winding resolution (though excellently crafted by Ralph), let me highlight the two most important bits / changes:

Committees have been empowered to take action and make decisions on their own, without any Board approval or input. (Assuming there is no fiscal impact or the action/decision isn’t controversial.)

All committees will now have designated chairs (chairpersons). In most cases one chair will be a Board member and the other will be a non-Board member.

In the past, committees have come up with great ideas but they weren’t acted on (or at least not quickly). An example of this delay was the member suggestion about adding information on “Places To Eat” to the website. The Website Committee picked this up and developed a proposal… but it really went nowhere until the Board voted on it.

Also, some committees have languished or failed to do much of anything because there has been no clear leadership or people driving them. Designated chairs serving as leaders, discussion moderators, and cheerleaders (to get people fired up to do something) will hopefully help. We also believe having non-Board member committee chairs will provide an opportunity for WGA members to get their feet wet in the leadership arena (pool?) before they take the plunge (going off the deep end?) and run for the Board.

We have had an excellent initial response from folks wishing to volunteer to serve on our committees, and still have room for more great volunteers. So far, 8 people have volunteered, and we are actively looking for more volunteers. If you have questions, either PM me or post a note here.

I plan to keep this open to new volunteers until next Monday. So please get back to me if you are thinking you might want to volunteer but are not sure.

The most frequently asked question by PM was related to time committment. Basically, the answer is that is up to you. We appreciate any assist that we can get, and most committees do most of their work on line, here in the forums. There will be an expectation that committee members actively participate, and folks that go silent for over a month can expect to be asked if they want to stay involved or just be deleted from the committee to make room for others.

These are empowered committees, and members will be helping to make decisions on behalf of the WGA. The campout committee is already a little behind in what needs to be done, so that group should expect to hit the ground running when appointed next week.

So, please, consider volunteering to serve on one of our committees for the upcoming year. I think that you will enjoy it, and we can use your help.
