I see the concept as really not much different than the “State of Mind” competition that Socko put on, but in a different scale.
I think if I was going to host such an event, I would spread about 10 caches out in areas preferably outside the suburban area. I would want the event to consume 6-9 hours, depending on the placements.
I would also like to do a longer event; lets say 10 caches spread across 1/2 of the state. Could even use some existing caches with assistance from the cache owners. That event could be done over the course of a weekend. The cash prize is a bonus; I look more forward to the fun of the competition.
The game could actually be started online- the teams all pay via paypal; at a set time and date, the coordinates, hints, and other info are e-mailed to all the teams. Once a team is done, they would have to call or meet the “judge” to prove their finds. All teams would later meet for a supper gathering at a pre-determined place and time to discuss the great time had by all.
I’m excited just thinking about it! Opinions and ideas? Bring em’ on!

12/18/2003 at 12:34 am #1746288Why not? It isn’t going to be held to any rules but what the participants agree on. For years I did hidden transmitter hunting that was pretty much a road race of several teams from a starting point and then often a foot race to the transmitter. Nobody got hurt. Two of the teams were Milwaukee Policemen.
Perhaps do it like a road rally where departing is staggerd and time to finish was used to determine the winner. For example, using Mapsource, times from waypoint to waypoint would be determined and points(minutes) taken from a team calling in early. This would minimize the racing aspect.
Maybe too, ten participants are given a different order to find the waypoints which would prevent bunching up except at the final.
Sounds like fun. I’ll ante up depending if I physically have a chance at winning.

Caching and working in Omaha Nebraska12/18/2003 at 6:08 am #1746289This sounds like lots of fun, and I would like to participate, but coming from central Iowa in winter is not likely.
That said I think if you posted maybe three sets of coords at each location teams would have to choose which direction to go, and the team with the best choices would have the best chances of winning, while spliting up the group into any number of directions.
Maybe some of the coords could be just a dead-end and not adding to the final solution, giving other teams a chance to catch-up.
Hope you come up with a fun game, I’ll be watching for the results.
Team Kilroy was here!02/04/2004 at 1:24 am #1746290I’m thinking about organizing this “Dache for cash” on Saturday, March 13th, if there is still any interest.
Some changes I’m considering.
[*]Each cache station would contain a self inking stamp.
[*]Each participant would be given a complete list of all the caches/coordinates coordinates.
[*]Each team would be given a sealed envelope containing the first cache they must search for. Each team would be given a different starting cache, unless there are more teams then caches. In that case, several teams may be searching for the same cache initially. The assigning of the envelopes would be by random drawing.
[*]Cachers could complete the caches in any order they desire (except starting cache).
[*]First team back with all their finds stamped, is the winner.Possibly variations would be to stagger the team’s starting time, and keep track of each team’s elapsed time. The team to complete the series in the shortest time would be the winner. The first team back wouldn’t necessarily be the winner, and so forth.
If there is snow on the ground, the caches would be placed so the are relatively easy to find. The idea of the game is probably geared more towards GPS skill, and navigation skills.
I’d like to get plenty of input on the rules, etc, before I lock down the date and time. Like I said, March 13th works good for me.
Anyone still interested?

Waukesha County, and Western Milwaukee County. I’m thinking of the base of operations being a park a short distance from my house. (ability to run home between the start and finish).
I would like to be able to fit about 15-20 caches into the game. With that amount, the distance can’t be too spread out.

02/05/2004 at 12:03 am #1746293Sounds like a fun afternoon event. Staggared or mad dash sound about the same. Any demerits for speeding tickets? I’ve had dealings with the Waukesha Sheriffs Dept. before. We’re still interested.
02/05/2004 at 5:19 am #1746294I’d love to, but unfortunatly, Saturdays are out for me for awhile. (Unless of course you want to do a night competition) Now that would be fun!
02/05/2004 at 2:27 pm #1746295This is right up our alley!!
We’re still in!!
02/05/2004 at 2:36 pm #1746296May goal would be to get at least 10 teams involved. That would make a $100 payout to the winner. If more then 10 teams played, I would go with a 70/20/10% payout for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.
With my goofy work schedule, it will be another 3 month before I have another Saturday off. That’s why I’m leaning towards this date.
If those interested post here soon, I’m considering emailing you a quick survey with a couple ideas I have. I’d like to taylor it based on the participants suggestions/concerns.
02/05/2004 at 6:07 pm #1746297Sounds like a great time…. They’ll be doing something like this at the Midwest Invitational Geocaching Competition (GCGZ0B) http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=94377

02/06/2004 at 4:20 am #1746298I like the idea of the three purse, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, prize idea. Even at 10 teams, why not spread out the winnings. IMHO.
