05/10/2005 at 6:08 pm #1749351Amazing how much his site looks like geocaching.com…coicidence?…guy seems really original…and an unexperienced geocacher in my mind, but he does give fair warning of the spoiling nature of the pictures. Everyone is up to their own opinion and we all should experience the cache to determine what “we” think about it. Would be nice though if he is going to give detailed, spoiling accounts that he would atleast encrypt the text. I figure most of us won’t determine whether we go to a cache based on these accounts. My advice…just don’t look at the pictures and as far as feeling being hurt because of these blunt comments, well…I think they will have little value to the geocaching community. just my .02 Kevin 05/10/2005 at 6:47 pm #1749352quote:

Oooooops! 05/10/2005 at 9:54 pm #1749354Just wanted to say that if I don’t like a cache I vote with silence. Just abbreviations, etc. As for our friend of topic, if they enjoy caching this little, they will filter out of the sport and leave it to the enlightened remainder It is really hard sometimes to not ask why they skipped the great hide and put it under a pile of sticks in the relative open… But on the other hand they’ve also increased my cache count by one. If they put very little thought into it, they probably didn’t waste too much of my time anyway. I mean oh shucks, I had to walk through a city park to find it? Poor me! Oops, I just realized that the way this is worded, people may take it as a critique of the cache in question, but I didn’t even check the finder’s page. I would have no problem with this one the way it’s described. A quick in and out and on to the next one. Who got hurt by that? Be cool Honeybunny! 05/10/2005 at 11:27 pm #1749355Let me play “Devil’s Advocate” for a moment. A couple of people see some information about caching. They decide to give it a try. They find that they rather enjoy it and begin to do it more often. They come up with a way to rate what they see/do/find that they enjoy. While those of us who have been doing this for a while, and have seen the good, bad and ugly of the sport may find this offensive…I have to wonder, have any of those who have criticized them bothered to shoot them an email and ask what’s going on? Other than the request made by Uncle_Fun, has anyone asked them to do anything about their logs or photos? Has anyone bothered to find out where they heard about Geocaching and who, if anyone, parented this couple? Perhaps they are doing what someone did before them. All of this seems like a personal attack and we at the WGA don’t do that, right? I for one plan to send them an email and see how they’re doing…who knows after that!

I agree, here (except for the unecessarily snide rhetorical question at the end). Obviously these folks may not understand that thier comments and pictures are offending other cachers. It has happened to me that rather revealing commments have been made in logs that jeopardized the integrity of the hide. Each time it was by an inexperienced cacher. We need to be proactive and reach out to mentor these folks. All it takes is one email. That said, I am looking forward to seeing their first hide.

MajorBratI e-mailed a friendly note!! 05/11/2005 at 2:29 am #1749360I had emailed these folks early in their geocaching days – either last week or before. You should email them directly with your suggestions. [This message has been edited by Auntienae (edited 05-11-2005).] 05/11/2005 at 2:57 am #1749361As I mentioned earlier. I did email Mole_n_Opossum asking that they remove the website link in the caches that I own. I mentioned that some of the comments in another cache log were inappropriate. And asked that if they didn’t have something nice to say, then to say nothing at all. I pointed out that the cacheowners have invested a lot of time and energy in placing their caches. I reminded him that without the cacheowners, there would be nothing for them to search. He responded very quickly to me today. He was thankful for my time and well written email. He is going to remove the links on the caches that I own. He did provide some insight into what he is doing and why. I think that if there are any cacheowners that don’t like what he is doing that they should let him know. I did keep my email polite, respectful and void of emotion. Uncle_Fun 05/11/2005 at 4:01 am #1749362I can try to understand some of their comments, but it seems like they just want to be critical. One of their logs started with, “Why people start cache names with “the” I’ll never know.” I don’t understand the point of that comment. [This message has been edited by bnb to remove my petty comment.] [This message has been edited by bnb (edited 05-11-2005).] 05/11/2005 at 4:39 am #1749363That’s cool Uncle_Fun. It’s nice that a cool headed note to them seemed to do the trick. Didn’t take 24 hours for this thread to go hot now did it? 05/11/2005 at 11:18 am #1749364quote:

MB05/11/2005 at 11:58 am #1749365My e-mail TO them was very friendly and just asked what their input about the cache being so simple was about, etc. I mentioned about the TB’s and the #’s showing that those are usually blurred. Didn’t attack them, I felt, just inquired nicely and stated that YES some caches are really easy, but now I go for the 4 by 4’s as I call `em LOL Let ya know how it comes out!
