OK, I don’t expect this to last, but as of now I’m in the lead for the Nov. LCG!

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

Thanks MB, but as I expected I have already started to slide down the standings, with Sagasu taking the lead. Your dad could pick up a few more points if he did a couple revisits on my Ursa Minor caches in the Mead Wildlife Area 😆

And you are in a “target rich environment” for the Lonely Cache Game! 😉

Except that the three closest to me are mine, and I’ve found almost all the rest of them, so the best I can do is revisit.

Hmmm – I’ve seemed to have lost total interest in the LCG. I didn’t think I’d ever say that, but it happened.

Any reason in particular that made you lose interest?

Well I might as well just say it. I know it’s not going to popular with “management”, but I might as well state my facts. DISCLAIMER: These are my personal opinions and observations of the way events played out and may / may not be the same opinions and observations others had.

Back just before the big event in West Bend the webmaster stated he was quitting and didn’t want any involvement. 2 of us volunteered to step up and keep things running to the best of our abilities. I’ve supported multiple commercial websites in the past, but this was the first “home grown low budget” (my opinion) website implementation I’ve ever been involved with. I still accepted the invitation and put forth 110% learning the nuances of this website. This included learning a completely new toolset which I was getting my arms around fairly well. My major responsibility (my choosing) was the Lonely Cache Game and helping the current admin approve / monitor the submissions. I really enjoyed this aspect.

It was also my responsibility to figure out how to get the data populated for the next cycle so the submissions would still work. I ground my way through this during a very busy project and 60-80 hour work weeks at work and delivered the goods. So far so good. I was even complemented on the turn around time by the existing LCG admin (much appreciated by me). During this process the old webmaster ignored all emails and PM’s via various methods and also a plea to help an alumni member of the same college. I figured he meant what he said about not wanting to be involved. Then it all went south. The old non-participating webmaster decided he should do his “magic” and loaded up the data for the LCG. This was 2 days after the data was already loaded by me and notices online were posted that things were done and ready. During the process I also documented my process so it would be repeatable (exactly what I communicated to everyone I was going to do). At the same time I found out the old webmaster loaded the data I discovered that someone else was developing an import program. That was the last straw as I thought this project had been delegated to me. Apparently multiple thought I wasn’t responsive enough, competent enough, or ??? because neither party thought to keep me abreast of either of their initiatives.

I decided it was best to resign as webmaster and focus my volunteer efforts on other organizations. I don’t mind being a volunteer, but when backstabbed it’s not worth it. Besides there are numerous other volunteer opportunities available to me and those organizations will be happy to have me.

What ruined the LCG? Well right now the whole LCG is a bit soured for me based on the above situation. I’m hoping that time will heal the wounds and I’ll be back at it and maybe still collect some points next month.

I was contacted by only 1 board member (not leadership) and asked to reconsider which I commend the effort. I explained the situation and restated it was just best to step away at this point.

I’m not planning on leaving caching, the WGA, etc. but just resetting my priority list. No names were listed because I don’t hold a grudge against any individual or their specific actions. This is just a case where multiple independent events pushed my over the edge.

Sorry to hear that CJ. I was really hoping to see your talents put into helping bring the site a 2010 look and feel.

Who knows? Some deadwood floated away that improved my outlook on the association; maybe you’ll experience a similar situation.

I’ve got big shoulders and will get over it in time. In fact I was hoping to develop some web based tools to help promote the WGA and maybe even use them to generate some revenue (i.e. micro payment version of INATN – pay for non-members, free for members).
