Thanks for all your experiences and insights. We thought about the dangers of pushing it too close to October, so hearing that right after Labor Day isn’t bad is really good to know. Hopefully we can get things to line up and this can actually happen. It will have been over three years now since we’ve been able to take a “real” vacation.

Thanks again. We were able to finally settle on something and will be visiting the park toward the end of September. We want to swing by Devils Tower either on the way there or back home, too. Something to look forward to, thanks for all the ideas and suggestions.

Ooh, awesome!  Make sure that you smell the bark of the pine trees at Devil’s Tower, you will be surprised by their scent.

Just came across this thread so it might be too late…

Yellowstone is a mile high and chilly as I found out on my honeymoon camping trip at the eastern entrance in mid August – found ice covering the puddles in the morning.  I remember throwing all my towels and clothes atop my summer weight sleeping bags to stay warm at night,

When I mentioned the cold to my mom, she said don’t you remember they had snow banks yet on your childhood trip on your birthday (June 19th)?

            Enjoy the sights and smells…

A very good point!  It gets very cold there at night, we got pretty chilly in our tent when we camped there.
