Well, I archived all but 4 of my caches just now and that number will be down to 3 once I retrieve a container with 4 TB’s in it. That’ll leave just 3 active caches for me – all in the woods with no muggles. The archivals include all my cemetery caches as well.

I realize my area is not Ashwaubenon or Green Bay, but I’m still pissed over this situation and will not take any chances to have something like that happen here. If it does happen, at least it won’t be any of my caches in all likelihood.

As for me geocaching – I’m done in muggle city for the most part and will keep to the woods.

This whole incident won’t change anything from my perspective on how I place urban caches or how I hunt urban caches. I think both sides of the operation from a caching perspective did exactly as they should have. It was placed (approved as listed I can only assume) and many hunted and found it. That’s what it’s all about.

It was just a film canister and I’d be laughing my ars off if it were me and it happened twice. If it were me, I’d love to be talking with the boys in blue about the “situation”, “issue”, or whatever else they’d like to call it.

I was going to respond to the other comments about “Stu”, but I’m done. No more comments from me on this thread. Done, notta, zippo.

Too bad you can’t mark a thread as “ignore” like a cache.

For those out there who think that the reaction of some geocachers in this thread has been over the top while the reaction of the police was reasonable, I would encourage you to review the recent logs on this cache, one of which was posted by someone who knows a thing or two about this topic from a first-hand perspective.

I guess this should go here.

It would be nice to try and educate the department on geocaching. You could show them the logs on the http://www.geocaching.com website displaying peoples enjoyment of finding this cache for good various reasons, however now it is tainted. I guess to make this short I am disappointed with the logs posted after the cache was disabled. I know that is geocaching.com and not this website but some are members here, those comments are not going to help out any situation like this. ❓

I enjoy geocaching and want awareness and membership to grow. I just don’t like see things that might taint it. If stuff like this happens in the future you just have to try to help them see the reason we do this, otherwise just walk away. You’ll never “make” anyone listen or understand if you insult them.

    Thank you.

TKKS if you do pop back in here to read this, you do have the ability to clean up those logs. the Delete log function works wonders and I don’t think anyone would be offended if you deleted their NOTE especially if you tell them why. (I have a feeling that they all have read this thread though too.)

I too am finding some of the posts on here disheartening. For one, to just give up geocaching because of these rare isolated incidents is not only ignorant and short sighted, but exactly the kind of quitting attitude our sport doesn’t need to properly represent it. Secondly, each contact with law enforcement is a case by case basis, and one negative contact with some officers should not be the measuring stick by which all police contacts should be judged. Also remember, YOUR attitude in the field towards law enforcement will determine their response and attitude toward you. If you happen to run into an overzealous cop, there’s nothing to be gained by getting into a pissing match with them in the field. Speak with their boss later, the ,chief of police or the county sheriff and address the issue in a an adult professional manner at the top. I’m not here to defend either side, seeing as I fall on both sides as a cacher and as a police officer. Just try to keep an open mind. You wouldn’t quit driving just because someone has a crash would you? So instead of quitting caching and archiving caches, hang in here, don’t let this be your crutch to quit. Use it as a chance to educate others and turn some muggles into geocachers.

I will not be archiving anything. In fact quite to the contrary, you can look for a few new Bigguy-Pmurk and Team RK caches around your local neighborhoods in the weeks to come (as soon as my schedule allows me time to do so). Gorish, I know that your post was not directed at anyone in particular, but it kinda seems like you’re chewing your fellow cachers a new one and telling us that we don’t know how to act with/around law enforcement. As for my situation, although I was nothing short of ass kissing, the officers (one in particular) still had an attitude toward me. This situation nor any other run in with law enforcement that I have had will make me stop caching, and that includes hiding and finding. In fact, I went and grabbed a few more caches after that little run in, despite my little meet-n-greet.

tkks – Another thing to keep in mind is if you do end up archiving the listing, you can email Groundspeak to lock the cache page so that no further logs can be submitted. Just making sure you know all your options as you consider what to do.

Folks, as you think about posting additional notes to this cache page, just remember that tkks is the owner of this listing and to please respect the cache owner in this matter. — this is me talking, not the BOD.

An attempt at this is in the works.

I wasn’t aiming my post at anyone at all, it was more of a general statement. I do hate that there are power hungry cops that give the rest of us a bad name. But what can ya do, there are douchebags in every profession, I just want to get the word out that most are normal, easy going people, that do understand logical explanations of things and don’t always jump to hasty conclusions. Most love technology too and would be open to hearing about geocaching. I’m too new around here to attack or flame anyone on here, can’t we all just get along?

I didn’t mean for the tone of my post to be so negative, it just kind of came out that way. I think I just mis-interpreted what you had stated, giving way to my post thusly leading to your second post and now to this one… or something. I agree that there are douchebags in every profession and such. You’re never too new to state your opinion regardless of whom it may p.o. Again, sorry if I caused any waves with you. Cheers, mate 😆 !

Wow. Just wow. That is frightening.

Though I will say bigguy, you do look mighty suspicious… 😆

Latest update: I heard back from the Ashwaubenon Police and they asked me to e-mail a statement about what happened on Tuesday and I did just that.

I described the incident and also explained what geocaching is and give them the link to geocaching.com. I also explained the cache has been there for over a year with over 90 finds.

As for archiving my own caches, I’m told I’m overreacting to this. Maybe. But at the moment, I’m not particular happy about all this and will be taking a break from geocaching for a while.

I retrieved my local cache containers today and will hit the road tomorrow afternoon to get the ones of town. The only ones that are still active are all in the woods with no muggles around.

Play the game the way you want. If it’s no longer fun to own urban caches, no sweat man. It’s all about choice. To me, it just means you are going to work even harder to make quality woodland caches.
