At what point in your geocaching career (after so many weeks/months, so many finds, etc.) did you discover the WGA, and what kept you coming back after that initial discovery?
01/15/2009 at 3:58 am #1900398I think it had to be a good 6 months, but I can’t remember that far back. LOL What brought me back was the forums and having the ability to meet new people, find out more about caching and seeking help with my GPS (Trudy & the Beast came to my rescue on that one)
It has become, what I like to refer to as “HOME” I know a lot of people here and can keep in pretty good contact with many of them via the WGA and events. I like meeting the Newbies here, offering them help if/when I can, but with so many great people here, many get to the Newbies before I can. It’s a great place to hang out, see what cachers are up to and learn new stuff everyday!!
When the computer is up and running properly, I visit quite often!!
Thanks for the great question!!
01/15/2009 at 5:31 am #1900399For me, I began caching in March of 2006 but didn’t find the WGA until the 19th of May 2007 when I attended the Spring Campout at Hartman Creek State Park. I actually just showed up on Saturday and was graciously welcomed even though I did not preregister. I had not met any other cachers on the trails up to that point and it was here that I first met Seth and Marie, Zuma, Becky and Geopink. Geopinks help uploading the cache info really jumpstarted my success by explaining the goto function and how to enter waypoints.
The welcome I recieved there made the decision to check out the WGA website a no-brainer. The fun we have in the forums and the serious stuff too, all makes the organization tighter. For those I have not met yet, we can all get some kind of feel as to what personalities are out there. While written text can only divulge so much about a person, I feel that we are all friends or nearly family (from the closest sibling to the obnoxious uncle, from the wacky grandmother to the precious newborn)
Being able to check in here to read about other cacher’s successes also keeps me coming back. To follow others as they reach milestones in their caching careers and to congratulate them as they do in return makes for a great community.Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
01/15/2009 at 4:13 pm #1900400We signed up on gc.com on June 26, 2006, finding our first cache that same day.
I signed on to the WGA website the end of February 2007. Timberline Echoes had told us of this site, but not wanting to have another message board to visit, I resisted for a long time.
I shouldn’t have waited so long!
Although I have actually had the chance to connect with friends made on other message boards in the past, because the WGA is regional, those connections have been made far more often. I feel like some of those connectons have become “real world” friends, as opposed to virtual friends. (Read “Bowling Alone in America” if you don’t follow this comment). The opportunity to throw together impromptu events, like that organized by OPS for “Marsh to the Phillipines,” is part of what makes this place unique. We can plan for the official events, but we can connect in other ways as well.
This is also a wonderful place to get all those questions answered, whether they have to do with the latest headscratcher about GSAK or good Crock Pot recipes. (Thanks everyone!)
Those of us who play this game hard usually find our way here. The challenge is to help those who might be occasional players find that you don’t have to be a geocaching fanatic to find value in the WGA and its website.
01/15/2009 at 5:32 pm #1900401I signed up with the WGA before I actually started caching. I was trying to learn about the activity to see if it was something I was interested in. I believe I found it with a search engine.
01/15/2009 at 6:36 pm #1900402Just under three months of caching I became a member of WGA in December 2004. That was quite awhile ago but I think I found it through a link on a cache page. I have primarily been a “lurker” on here, checking out what’s happening in the state, not really posting anything until now. I have continued to come back to this site for information and links to useful geocaching sites. Thanks for the question!
01/15/2009 at 11:03 pm #1900403We joined the WGA less than a month after we began caching. I think that I had actually discovered the site the day after we did our first cache, but lurked for a little while seeing what the water was like. We decided to join and haven’t looked back since 8) .
01/15/2009 at 11:28 pm #1900404I started geocaching in May 2004, and starting lurking here within a year or so, though I dont recall when. I like the forums because it is a place to share with other folks the love and joy of geocaching.

01/16/2009 at 8:53 pm #1900405I signed up on geocaching.com on 2/18/04 and bought my first GPSr which arrived on 2/22/04. I found 3 caches that day. After returning from my trip to Charleston, South Carolina, I learned about the WGA and became a member on 3/4/4. I found it from a linky on one of the cache pages.
I attended my first event on 4/24/04 with my niece Messa where we were taken under the wing of Nana & Papa who made us feel very welcome. We spent the remainder of the day finding caches with House of Brew, Socko and BigCall. Messa & I still remember the fun we had.
We keep coming back to the WGA because of the 1) friends we made, 2) what we have learned from going to the events and 3) fun.
