What was your first “stupid question” that you asked about geocaching, that you can still remember to this day?
I’ll go first, to provide an example …
I remember asking (on the WGA forums) how many feet a single Lat. and Long. “tick mark” is in feet. Which in itself doesn’t sound too bad. But at the time I had no clue that my GPSr would allow me to manually enter coordinates for a spot other than where I was stand (ie. that you could change the coordinates in the viewing window after holding down “Enter” on my Garmin, I thought they were basically “read only”). So unless I preloaded a cache via the website, I was under the impression that you had to march around in the woods watching your coordinates change … in which case having a concept of distance was helpful. To my defense I had owned me GPSr a couple years for traveling, before I discovered geocaching, so I was use to only using it for preloaded routes from my computer and I also had no clue where the owners manual was.07/27/2006 at 8:43 pm #1763970I was thought of a GPSr as a relatively simple machine… until I first saw one. We were going ice fishing with some buddies many years ago. A friend had his GPSr on in the car and was rattling off the lat/lon. Then he told me how fast I was driving. It took me more than a few minutes to figure out how it was calculating speed. Unreal…
Today I feel like an idiot thinking back to that moment. Especially since I’m a teacher!
07/27/2006 at 8:44 pm #1763971You’re right, that’s pretty stupid.
(Sorry, Ron, I couldn’t resist! 😀 )So now I guess I have to fess up. My stupidist question was not actually geocaching related, but it’s a good story — at least it used to be. When I was in college the world was still using slide rules, although a few new-fangled calculators were around. I was a liberal arts kind of student, but I decided to take some science courses too, so I signed up for a physics class, for which I had to own a slide rule. The first time I picked it up I asked someone why the inches weren’t all the same size.
That story used to be a lot funnier when people still knew what a slide rule was.
07/27/2006 at 9:17 pm #1763972How does one open an ammo box?
07/27/2006 at 9:54 pm #1763973Keep ’em coming … this is fun.
Ken: I know it was extremely stupid of me, especially since I’m pretty good with techy stuff, plus I’m reminded of it every time I use the good ‘ol eMap.
Jeff: I had a little trouble with the first ammo box too, not that I couldn’t get it open, but it kinda hurts when you do it wrong.
07/27/2006 at 11:31 pm #1763974My question was to my sister, the one who got me into geocaching. Well she didn’t tell me what we were doing and she had Dad’s gps and we were in Ludington MI, it was the weekend i moved to WI. And we started on the hunt. And Even though dad has had the GPS for 2 3 years now i never bothered to know how it works.. and while we were hunting i looked at Jen and asked How do you know what your looking? and how do you know your there?
Yea now looking back at it.. i feel really dumb..07/30/2006 at 7:45 am #1763975😳
How do they know when you are coming so they can go put out the container for you?
07/31/2006 at 2:25 am #1763976When we first met geocachers that had just returned from the woods, they mentioned that they had just found a “cache” in the woods…..so I asked “How much cash did you find? Feeling sorry for me, they showed me a little plastic lizard and handed me a Cache Page. I read, and saw the light!
08/10/2006 at 9:36 pm #1763977How do you pronounce “cache”? 😳

08/10/2006 at 9:40 pm #1763978I’m sure I asked lots of stupid questions — too many to remember. I do remember a question from my mother that was too funny not to share (not a stupid question though). This was before she started caching with me, and I had dragged her along to a cache. She used to just sit in the car and wait for me. I must have taken a little longer to get back, because once I got in the car she asked, “are you sure you’re good at this?”
I remember that every time I find myself searching for longer than a couple minutes. It makes me smile!

At least you asked.
This one is driving me a bit nuts … more than I am already. It’s not pronounced …. CATCH
But, it’s not SPELLED … CASH (I’ve been seeing those in log entries now).08/10/2006 at 10:46 pm #1763980I was doing Covert Cache (GC3798) earlier today, and my coworker asked the bartender for the cache (“cash”).
… The bartender thought he was being robbed for a second.
I think using “geocache” is safer when having to ask….

I’m slapping myself for not checking to see if a cache would be at this site when we visited it a few months ago for the first time… Oh well, guess it will be time for another mission soon 😉
