MemberCongratulations! You have just been elected to a two-year term on the Board of Directors! However, after eight months on the BOD, you find that it wasn’t what you expected it to be. How do you go about handling the remainder of your term?

MemberI would handle the remainder of my term the same way as I handled the first 8 months. By accepting a nomination I have committed to a two year term and will give it the attention that it requires whether I like it or not. Remember, I am not acting in my best interests, I am acting in the membership’s best interests.

I would finish the remainder of my term, and serve the members of the WGA to the best of my abilities. I do not enter into a commitment such as this lightly, and if elected I would serve out my term to the end.

ParticipantA great question because serving on the WGA Board, agreeing to run for a position, is not something that should be taken lightly. It really takes a team effort by all Board members, working with members, to successfully complete the slate of activities for the year.
In running for a second term, I am looking forward to continuing the progress that we have made. And yes, I will stick with it for the full term.

MemberGreat question, and I will take this one with a bit more seriousness than the alternate universe question, primarily because this can be a real problem, and has been in the past. With only 9 people on the board, it is important that we get good performance from all 9 people. If you end up with only 4 or 5 worker bees, then it gets to be a drag for the ones doing all the work, while the dead wood coasts along.
This past year we have been very lucky to have a board comprised of generally good workers, and people that actively contribute to the progress of the association. That is the main reason that this past year has been so productive and successful, the fact that we had a great team of 9 board members pulling well together in the same direction.
Past years have not had that, as there as been times when 3 – 5 board members did not do much at all, and left all the work to the other half of the board. This is a recipe for poor performance. We need to have 9 people all working together if we want 2011 to be as successful as 2010 was.
So to answer your question, I thought about this before I decided to run again, and decided that I could do it for another 2 years, and not be just another piece of dead wood. I have already done it for 4 years, and know how much time it takes, so I dont expect to change my mind over the course of the term, and I am running again because of the ideas that I have and the things that I still want to get improved.
But I do think that if any board member gets tired of it at anytime, it is better for them to just admit that their interests have changed and they have grown in a different direction than they thought they would, and there is no real crime in that. Better to resign, and open the seat up to someone who wants to contribute than to take hang around like a piece of dead wood.
Great question.

MemberUpon accepting the nomination, I have already agreed to work hard for the WGA and its members for the entire 24 months. Working with any group or committee requires give and take. I can guarantee that I will be there working for the membership for the full 2 years

MemberIf you make a commitment you follow thru with that commitment!
You put 100% into any job you take on.
I would hope that after the term if I did step down, the board and members would be caught totaly by surprise. “Never saw it coming!”
Excuse the crude reference, but I don’t “pee” in the pool! That’s not to say I won’t splash or make waves!

MemberMy answer is short and simple. No long write up this time. I am not a quitter. ❗

MemberI personally believe if you sign up for something you should see it through. Give a 110% until the end. And like northwoods Tom said make the other board members say I didn’t see that coming. But if you are having problems talk it out with other board members and maybe they might have a way of helping you through the problem or have a suggestion on how to make it through.
