Anyone hear about that zombie satellite? Nice to know that when we build a high tech piece of technology there’s a chance we can lose control of it, yet it still works at full power doing whatever it wants!
Funny thing…. I work in a cable television engineering firm.
Galaxy 15 (The “zombie”) is one I deal with almost everyday! When it went out there was some hectic scrambling to keep things going.
To deal with it, they sent over an out of date, and scheduled to be removed older satellite, Galaxy 12. They moved it into orbit at 133.0°W to take over programming for the now out of control G15.
Soon G15 will be crossing paths with AMC 11 and causing all you MTV fans to have issues!
It’s fun to play with satellites, but it’s really hard to fix a problem when they are 22,300 miles away! (For comparison, the GPS satellites are between 6,000 and 12,000 miles away)
Wasn’t it just MTV in Europe that would be disrupted though?
Nope. AMC 11 is a North Amercian satellite. There might be issues with some European SES birds in lower orbit that might get affected, but AMC 11 is all us.
AMC 11 carries all the MTV stuff; Spike TV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, etc. East coast feeds for Discovery Channel, as well as the East feed of Showtime…
