If you’re still not seeing the lat/lon, check to make sure you are logged in. If you aren’t logged in, it only shows the GC waypoint ID.

If everyone trades up, does that mean we’ll eventually see deeds to homes in caches? 🙂

in reply to: post county map on stats page? #1762925

    Hi,
Jeremy gives a good description of how to do this in this topic:
    http://wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4174

Hope this helps, if not, feel free to ask for clarification.

Very cool. What distance from the route does it use to determine if a cache is included or not? Is that configurable? This seems like a hidden feature – is there a link to the routing page anywhere? I looked in my account, my pocket queries, etc. but couldn’t find one.

I’m guessing it’s one of your firewall, spyware, antivirus software doing this in order to protect you from the evils that may be lurking in the attachment. When I ran ZoneAlarm several years ago I think it did something like this. What happens when you double click on it? Not sure of the fix, but you might want to check your settings to see if zip files are being blocked.

When did you say you’d have the upgrade that lists totals for Wisconsin counties? 🙄

I actually considered this, and spent maybe a grand total of 5 minutes looking for a public domain file containing coordinates/vectors/line segments or whatever for county borders. Not even sure if such a thing exists, but if someone knows of one, let me know and I’ll look into it.

Sounds like the fix worked for everyone. Thanks for trying it out and letting me know.

Found the problem – webcam caches weren’t being processed correctly. Never got tested because we’ve never found one! (You’d think after 300 caches and over 2 years of caching we’d have done one by now. Of course the one time we tried, the website was down). Thanks to Cheesehead Dave who helped me pinpoint the problem. New version is with the fix is available on the website (http://www.logicweave.com/cachestats.html). Hopefully I have all the various kinds of found-it logs handled now.

Note, if you have already installed, you will first have to uninstall the current version using add/remove programs before it will let you install the new one. If you try the new version and you still get 1/1/2000 as your first cache please let me know. Thanks!

…one thing I liked about Fizzymagic was the state by state count. Any plans for that here?

I wasn’t aware of Fizzymagic. CacheStats already lists your states, so I assume you are asking to put in a count for the number of finds in each state? If so, yeah, that sounds pretty doable. Other suggestions are welcome.

Dave – not exactly sure what’s going on with the 1/1/2000 problem, but I’m guessing you have a cache that’s included in your .gpx file that doesn’t have a found or attended log associated with it. Not sure how this could be though. I sent you a private message using this forum with more info.

in reply to: So please humor me #1761665

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was looking at a recent event page and it looks like you can now log a found it as well as an attended. Not sure when the change was made – used to be you would have to log multiple attended logs for the temporaries.

If I understand your question correctly, it sounds like Pocket Queries will address your issue ( http://www.geocaching.com/pocket ). This will allow you to create a .gpx file that contains up to 500 caches around a specific location.

I use GPXSonar to view cache info (reads .gpx files from pocket query directly). Although, it looks like the latest version requires PPC 2003 (I’m also running PPC 2002, so I must have an older version). GPXView is another very similar application. If you haven’t already, see them all here: http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/

For maps, I use Teletype (http://www.teletype.com). I can’t endorse their product unconditionally due to some problems I’ve had, but it does a pretty good job overall. I generate cache waypoints for their mapping software using a program I wrote: http://www.logicweave.com/waypointgen.html.
If you pair their mapping software with a compact flash or bluetooth GPSr, you have a pretty nice in-car navigation system to get you to the cache location. Unlike my handheld unit, teletype supports unlimited waypoints so if you take a long road trip, you can have access to as many caches as you want for each state you visit.

We just got back from a 7-state road trip. Since we didn’t have a precise itinerary, I loaded 1000’s of caches along our likely route. My 1 GB SD card had no problems holding the .gpx files plus the detailed roadmaps and yellow pages for 10 entire states with plenty of room to spare. With this setup, no matter where you are, it’s easy to see if caches are nearby.

Just another datapoint: our first geocoin ever (a Wisconsin coin) was stolen from the cache we placed it in earlier this year. The thief didn’t log the find or sign the logbook (obviously). I knew it would probably go “missing” eventually, but didn’t think it would happen at the first cache. Don’t know if we’ll release our remaining coins. If we do, it will probably be in a long, difficult multi so if they are going to steal it, they’ll have to work to get it.

I do agree that caches with bugs and coins are favored over similar caches in a given area. But the further away someone is, the less attractive the cache is and at some point the bug/coin won’t have any effect.

I’m currently writing a program to provide statistics based on the “My Finds” pocket query. I had planned to put in a few more features before I announced it, but this seems like a good time to let people know about it, so I put out a beta verison tonight. You can learn about it and download here: http://www.logicweave.com/cachestats.html

It’s currently a desktop application, but I hope to also offer similar capabilities via a web page in which case people could opt to publish their stats to the website, similar to keenpeople.com. Try it out and let me know what you think – you can send me suggestions using the email address on the lower left of the CacheStats page. Definitely let me know if there is anything that you find confusing or if you run into any problems. As far as features, one thing I plan on adding is some form of output so people can brag to the world if they want.

Note you will need the .Net Framework installed. I don’t have good data on what percentage of computers already have it installed, but I suspect it will be a problem for some people especially if they haven’t been keeping up with service packs.

    Have fun!
    Doug
