When I was a newbie, I was neither outdoorsy nor techie. I still can hardly call myself either. I was all about the find, the solve, the a-ha moment. It is still a big part of the game for me. But along the way I discovered the joys of finding hidden places I would never have known about, and the social aspect, both in person and online. I enjoy a cool container, a creative puzzle, and the journey to the cache. And how fun to get all of that in one cache! But I also appreciate a quick no-brainer to boost my numbers and/or my ego. A power trail is great exercise and big numbers on the same day. If I try to find something to like about every cache, I usually can. That’s why I try to make note of something of interest in my log. My cache isn’t found very often, but when it is, a few words about the place, the people caching with, or even the weather is appreciated. Since I am not up on the latest technology, I wouldn’t be using it if I entered caching today. Still, it serves the purpose perfectly fine, and I think it comes down to consideration of others and the environment, and keeping everything in perspective.
Random silly thought I decided fits the purpose of this thread…a year or more ago, someone who was fairly new to the site said they started reading the Thread Stealers from the beginning. I wondered if that person ever finished. I started reading it when the other forums’ posts dwindled. I only read from when I last checked in. Now I don’t know if you can access the old posts, but did anyone ever read all of them?
Groundspeak get a cold?
Yeah, I finally have time to log my Cache Ba$h finds and the site decides not to cooperate. 🙁
Not exactly like the wormhole on this site, but I went to the geocaching website and take me to the old search and postal code and typed in my zip code, 54952. The caches that came up were in the Czech Republic. Trying several other nearby zip codes gave me caches listed in my area. I’ve always thought Menasha was a world apart. I guess the web programmers agree!
found this explaination. Waupaca does the same thing… http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=334377
Thanks for researching this. It seems that other cities around the world have similar codes to our zip codes. You would think that it would ask us to enter USA or have a drop down menu. Also, I never encountered this prior to having two options for cache searches (old version and new). I wonder what changed. Anyway, thanks for investigating!

12-hour BUMP!
Come on, what am I supposed to do for entertainment if no one is posting here for me to read?
Or are you saying I should be doing something productive?
Or am I saying that?
While we’re on the sunflower topic–I bought a pot of four sunflowers at a garden center a few years ago. They were put on the west side (full sun), but they only last a couple weeks, getting maybe a foot and half tall. I blame myself (too much or not enough water, should I have repotted them? etc.) but then again, maybe they just didn’t grow as well as some plants do. I have returned to that nursery every year and never found them again, nor at any other local place selling plants in the spring. Perhaps it would be better to start them myself from seed. When is it best to do that? Are they perennial? Is one variety hardier than the others? Advice?
I have done some EarthCaches, but I don’t think I have visited the website more than a couple of times. I haven’t done enough to be considered a “level”. I don’t care about the awards, not because I actually don’t care. It is just not a personal goal of mine. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t care to hear about others achieving the levels they set out to. I think cheering on anyone who sets out to meet a goal is a caring thing to do!
I usually can’t vote for COTM because I haven’t found the nominated caches, and I don’t really cache enough to see something COTM-worthy to nominate. Sometimes when I think I would vote for one, I see it has already won. So I am not a person with as much to think about in terms of COTM as other cachers would be. But thanks for reading my opinion!
Thanks for the explanations of lab caches. I didn’t see any icon on my souvenir page, but found it when I clicked on the lab cache and there was a button that said View Award.
Speaking of souvenirs, I see they are arranged somewhat alphabetically, with a random grouping in the middle that is alphabetical within itself…the organizer in me wants to click and drag these souvenirs to arrange them otherwise. Of course, it will not let me.
I don’t really understand how the lab caches work…are they actually just temporary caches? I thought these were a thing of the past. Do they count on your find total? I logged one but it isn’t on my profile of finds.
Lots of subjective-valued acclaim for me today…2 souvenirs on one cache, and getting in on the 00 page.
Fun night at the ballpark…even if the Royals lost to the Tigers 7-4.
Hello from Missouri!
