How do you watch a cache (computer-wise, I mean)? I randomly pull up cache pages of those I DNF, to see if others found them and maybe I should try again. Once in a while I remember a good cache and I read the logs since mine to see others’ reactions. Good reasons have been listed on why to watch a cache, but how is this done with technology? Do you get e-mail updates?

          Thanks for the bookmark, Marc!

          😀

Are you able to see it?

Yes, I even clicked on the one I had found, and a couple I hadn’t. I am not in the habit of looking at bookmarks. I’m kind of a random cacher, finding one and not even realizing there are others close by. I am hoping to try a few of these inside ones this winter (and even a few outside ones when I am in the mood for being punished by the elements).

I don’t have the vaguest idea how to do that. I suspect it involves computer code.

But I am making the old-fashioned paper list. So keep the suggestions coming!

So how do you give them as gifts??? Don’t you need to enter the license number and vehicle info?

When I bought mine at the campout last year at High Cliff, they didn’t request any information. I gave them the money, they gave me the sticker.

And on a vaguely related tangent, I have read the book Crazy English, by Richard Lederer. I believe he has many books about the quirkiness of English, like why we drive on a parkway and park in a driveway, for example. It is an interesting read, and even helpful if English is not your first language.

I heard on the news we got 14 inches here in Menasha. I didn’t have the option of not going in to work this morning. It was iffy, but I did make it without trouble. And we have great plowing in Menasha, so once I got back to the city limits, it was smooth sailing.

Did anyone cache in the blizzard areas?

What’s geocaching without a few obstacles? If it’s all about the journey, we had an informative and interesting one. And if it’s all about the smiley, we got that too. And if it’s all about the socializing, yeah, we did some of that. And if it’s all about the technology, there was more than we could handle. Thanks for opening this up to everyone. It was a neat experience!

Can anyone post a short definition of what wherigo is? From what I have gathered reading the forums, is it some kind of geocache that uses a specific type of GPSr?

Or if it is too complicated to explain briefly, is there a website that is a good resource about it?

                            http://www.wherigo.com

Basically a Wherigo is a virtual game that’s played out in the real, three-dimensional world. So rather than interact with objects and characters solely on a computer screen, you interact with those things that exist virtually at various real locations. i.e., rather than use your mouse to scroll to an area on your screen that contains an object, you might physically walk to a set of coordiantes or a set distance to “find” the object.

That means you need a device that can play a Wherigo game (a game is called a “cartridge” even though it’s not a physical cartridge). Those devices are currently Pocket PCs and a handful of Garmin GPSrs, although I have heard that Garmin is not building Wherigo support into its next models. 😯 .

A Wherigo geocache also involves a cache as part of the game. Typically after you complete the game, you get the coordinates to find the physical cache. Not all Wherigo games involve geocaches, and the “play anywhere” games on the Wherigo site are a good place to start.

I still think this concept is pretty high on the dork-o-meter but the kids get a bang out of them. It’s a little extra wrinkle to the game.

Perhaps as the game evolves it will become more than just completing virtual tasks in the field. I could see it having a natural application for puzzles where you need to physically visit locations in order to obtain the information rather than just Googling it. But I digress…

Thanks for your response. I have checked out the website. I do not have the right equipment, but if I can make it to Berlin on Sunday, I will come just to see what it is all about.

Hello and welcome! I also am a member of the lost glasses club. My sunglasses were left at a cache. I returned less than an hour later and they were gone, but I met folks on the trail who were looking to turn them in to lost and found. Yeah, geocachers are a pretty decent bunch. Look here for opportunities to cache, advice on technology, even a good story about caching or something else. Whether you are a sometimes cacher or a serious cacher, you’ll find this to be a great place to visit.
