I will only be there Saturday, and I will go for the new caches, because I have another West Bend outing this fall where I can attempt those I missed last year, and any others in the area.
My goal is 31-50, which would be more than last year, my first real geocaching adventure. I think I had about 10 finds prior to coming to West Bend last year, so with a solid year under my belt, things can only get better.
Last year I only encountered a “line” of about 4 people, which was actually just one team. It was nice to meet a few teams along the way. Sure, it will be more crowded this year, but as many of you have said, geocachers are some of the friendliest people we’ve met. Something for all–the kids, those looking for numbers, water caches, social events, prizes…Not a bad way to spend a weekend.
I won’t be joining you, but I will be looking for your logs. I did find the Pfeifer Park one where you are starting, but I DNF’d quite a few others. This was just back in May, and I plan to get out that way again in September. If I see you found the ones I missed, then they really are there! (And if not, well, maybe I am getting better at this!) Good luck!
As is usually the case with me, I don’t fit either category. I have always liked the outdoors in theory more than in practice. Never been fond of bugs, icky weather, or troublesome plants, but who is, I guess. My interests were always more of the indoor sort. And techie stuff? I arrived late on the scene, missing the big technological boom by a generation. So anything I know is what I have been taught, not what I have a natural curiosity for. Geocaching caught my interest because of the search. Finding the solution. Solving the puzzle. And doing something not everyone does. In the process, I am appreciating the outdoors a little more and learning a little technology along the way. And getting the thrill of the solve/seek/find of course.

I didn’t sign anything…was I supposed to? I posted a will attend on the event page, and when I contacted the chamber of commerce, they said I was registered.
You will have to sign and submit a disclaimer form at the event before they will give you the event materials (booklet, bag, stamp card). You can save a bit of time by printing out and filling in the disclaimer form ahead of time. It is available for download here:
Thanks!

Curious about something, I have never been to an event (or any other “social” gathering for that matter) that requires signing a disclaimer. What’s up with that? 😯
Every WGA event requires that participants sign a disclaimer. Because our events are typically more than a simple social gathering… i.e. we encourage seeking temporary and permanent geocaches… the disclaimer is to protect the WGA and event organizers from lawsuits in the event you get injured looking for the caches.
The disclaimer used at the Cache Ba$h is based on the WGA disclaimer. The disclaimer text was examined and improved by a lawyer last year at the West Bend Chamber’s expense, and now the WGA uses this more airtight wording at its events too.
Disclaimers would be unnecessary in a world without lawyers… at least without the ambulance-chasing, con man type lawyers.

Thanks to Marc_54140 and ImDutch for accompanying me on this caching day! We attempted 41 caches, and I logged 33 finds for today. It was a nice day to cache…not hot at all, no rain or wind, and even the traffic wasn’t bad. The muggles behaved themselves, and we had a nice lunch to end our caching adventure. I learned a little bit more about caching, got some hints for other caches, and was able to get many of those pesky DNFs off the list. Thanks for a great caching day!
Yes, I always read the cache page, though not always carefully. This is evidenced by a DNF that could have been avoided if I had been a more thorough reader. While not exactly new anymore, I still am inexperienced, and that is why I depend on the cache pages for the hints, and I read all the logs hoping for a hint, even if unintended. Plus, it is cool to read about the experiences of other cachers. Maps are important to me also, having only a basic GPSr. I would have higher numbers if I didn’t spend so much time reading the cache pages…or maybe I wouldn’t, because they would all be DNFs! I guess you have to do what works for you.
Funny you should mention this today. I was just thinking about how to be less obvious, and thought maybe the vest and hard hat and clipboard, but then thought maybe that would only make me more obvious. I have also considered wearing my WGA nametag. From a distance I might look like I had official business. Of course, if anyone actually asked me what I was doing, I suppose I would have to come clean. I hardly look the part of an official inspector of any kind. Does anyone regularly cache “in uniform”?

I think Jamie and I would love to join this outing. It’s kind of bad, but we have few DNF’s on our list. But I guess a few is still enough!!!! Email me with the details and where to meet. Thanks
PM sent
Welcome to geocaching! There is lots of information and support here at the WGA and in geocaching.com, and other places, I am sure. Have fun as you become hooked!
Welcome! You are already way ahead of me and I have been doing this a while. Don’t hesitate to visit these forums for questions, information, entertainment…we try to be all things.
Welcome to Wisconsin and the WGA! I think you will like both. Have fun caching!
I had hoped to get on gc.com tonight so I could do a few before the holiday festivities tomorrow. While I have been waiting, I have been cleaning out my e-mail, a task I usually do in bits and pieces, but have been doing it now for the past two hours. By staying online, I can keep checking back, but it seems I won’t be caching tomorrow. That’s ok, plenty of other things to stay busy with.
Update
Cache list is up to at least 40, but I found a few now, so that is good. So far it is just Marc and I, and it looks to be a half day, starting at 7 a.m. and going until we are done. Post or PM if you plan to come. More details will follow as the date approaches.
I enjoyed this article. Very funny. Also very philosophical–quote “there was a whole parallel world some other people were living in that I didn’t know anything about. I mean, on the one hand, there’s this world that we are passing though, living in, and we think it’s the same world for everyone, but then, every once in a while, every now and then, you get a glimpse of the fact that the world you’re living in is just your world and there is this whole other world – and no doubt more than one – that you didn’t know about, because you stay in your world all the time, and you realize that you might have gone to your grave never knowing about another world except for, say, the fact that you shoot basketball a lot at a park in the afternoon and, because of that, your world happens to collide with another one.” end quote. Really made me think.
