As a new LCG player, and not a serious one at that, prizes don’t motivate me. Points don’t motivate. I just tried to find the ones in my area that were lonely (not too many in the Fox Valley), and the ones that are, are too much for a newbie to get a handle on. There’s a reason they are lonely. But I think it is very motivating for those who relish the challenge. No time to travel to get the distant ones. I like the idea of separating them into sections for different parts of the state. I stumbled upon the game while exploring the website as a new WGA member, much like I stumble upon caches sometimes! It is fun to see who is getting points, but I don’t take it seriously.
I thought of some suggestions since my previous reply, but they are related to being a new geocacher. At the event in August, I went to the intro session. I was familiar with much of what was covered, but still learned something. Maybe there would be interest in another learning session, like some of the other types of geocaching that I have read about, finding markers, or night caching for example. Or in some of the technology available. I read the veterans’ comments on various subjects with interest, but aren’t going to waste a lot of time and space here asking questions that are a given if you know what everyone is talking about. Even a beginner part 2- Q & A kind of session maybe. So I don’t know if there is a good time for it during the weekend. Maybe it could be done at another kind of geocaching event. I will continue to read my e-newsletters, forums, and announcements to learn more.
Also, I agree if nothing changes, it is still a great event and I would enjoy it as much as I did this year.

Try working on some of the puzzle caches to get them solved for the “nice weather” finds. The Fox Valley has a–ahem–few.
Good idea. I love puzzles, but I have tried some of them up here and many are way beyond me. It will take most of the winter to solve any I consider doable. Still, if they were all easy caches, what fun would that be?
Ditto, Crockett3663. And thanks to all for the helpful hints. I am keeping my eyes open for any winter caching events, but realistically I know my caching time will go down. I will probably spend more time on the websites and reading about geocaching, but I will take advantage of those rare winter days when the weather is bearable for long periods of time to log a few finds.
This was a great event! I agree about having more time, but I am fairly new to this and need as much time as I can get. It got long at the end going through all the prizes, especially having a distance to drive home, but I can see Mister Greenthumb’s point about using that time as a social. Having a big prize was an incentive to stick around, though. Still, my main reason for attending would not be the prizes. I like the idea of having a variety of cache types. Maybe you could also include a list of last year’s coordinates, or any in the area, for those who are staying for the whole weekend. Although, that could be a lot of work that we could do on our own. All in all, it was organized very well. I especially appreciated the coordinate download, not having to spend half my morning entering them by hand, and a map of the area.
Welcome to the sport! I am also pretty new. I have a Garmin E-trex legend too. Bought new, used only a few times, and had a vertical line issue. Went to a forum, looked up technology issues, and found the solution. If you have 3.70 software version instead of the 3.90, you will need to download the 3.90. Here is the link:

Select Download
Takes only a few minutes and have had no troubles since. The E-Trex Legend is the only kind I have ever used, it is a basic model, and since I am new to the game, poor, and technologically challenged, it works for now.
I am from Menasha. More geocachers up this way than I realized. Glad to be part of the “family”.
