Today was a busy day for me.Ā I thought I would unwind by reading the day’s posts.Ā But alas, it seems I am FTP.
More than a week on this page.Ā We must all be busy with meaningful existence–no time for useless drivel.Ā āŗ
A post-noon FTP for October 3rd.
FTP for September 29th. That’s awesome, Gwyn!Ā What a challenging hobby, combining logic and reason with nature’s liklihoods and circumstance.Ā I do enjoy seeing the common birds I expect as well as sometimes something unusual.Ā Never anything that rare!
Happy Birthday BigJim!Ā I do remember the birthday FTP tradition, and it was for a page as well as the day…if you wait for a page FTP now, it won’t happen the same day.Ā šĀ You might grow old waiting for that these days.Ā Sorry to hear about one of the Bears legends too.
Happy 1212!Ā Enjoy the campout and picnic.Ā I wish I could join in, but I have to avoid gatherings, even socially distanced ones with masks, for a bit longer.Ā It looks like the weather will cooperate for the events!!
FTP for 9/11.
Today I visited the 9/11 memorial down the street.Ā I never knew the symbolism behind each piece, shape, position, color…a lot of thought went into designing it.Ā An adult and small child were there too.Ā I am glad people are teaching their children about its history.
Hardly a slave to fashion, but I was feeling the fall colors today.Ā I put on olive pants and my pumpkin-colored WGA state parks shirt.Ā Like it seems every season, we get a taste of what’s to come, and then more of the weather that is typical, before it changes more consistently.Ā I kind of appreciate the warning. š
Inservice training day.Ā Normally I’d have a quarter of my workday over by the time we’ll settle in for work today.Ā Still, it was nice to sleep in a little.
Debby you can load free maps on a GPSr that will show the trails of all of the state parks, and on smartphones you can load offline maps that will show the trails as well. On a smartphone you can load the caches āofflineā on to the phoneās drive so you donāt need reception, and can put the phone in āairplane modeā so that the wifi and bluetooth are off, that way you donāt eat up the battery much, but can still navigate to the caches, with trails, because of a smartphoneās built-in GPS chip. A bit complicated to set up the first time, but after that itās smooth sailing.
Thank you.
Do you remember Miss Othmar, the teacher from the Peanuts animated shows, and how she sounded…wah-wah, wah-wah?
That is what I heard reading your response.Ā š
I basically understand what you are saying.Ā Doing it is another matter altogether.Ā I should have been more prepared, having the caches marked on my paper map.
Yes, it was a good day.Ā My friend is a not a cacher, but tolerates it if we are on trails with caches.Ā I tried to get their whole family interested,Ā but it was momentary curiosity.Ā So we were left with my minimal technology and out-of-practice geocaching skills.
We saw a lot of itty bitty toads and frogs and chipmunks and garter snakes.Ā Not many birds, but we did hear an owl.
As for reception, does anyone know is it related to a carrier or a specific phone, or the weather, or location, or something else?Ā I have Verizon, which has always advertised broad coverage.Ā But I often get nothing in rural areas between Waupaca County and “up north”.
My hiking buddy has a state parks pass.Ā We had a trip planned to Governor Thompson State Park in July that got bumped to today.Ā Unfortunately, I had no reception at the park.Ā I had printed a trail map and had all the coordinates loaded, but I couldn’t see what caches were on which trails.Ā I found a couple caches, but we spent a lot of time wandering the wrong trails.
In the plus side, it didn’t rain and we got over 12,000 steps.
Thank you Jim and Jim for your replies.Ā The virus has messed up a lot for everyone.Ā While I am grateful the parks eventually opened, the restrictions and the timing in my personal situation will prevent me from visiting.Ā I am sure the DNR has done its best to ensure safety and offer some services.
I wonder how much a ticket is…š
A lot of you get around the state quite a bit…can anyone clear up for me admission to state parks?Ā I believe I looked on a DNR webpage, but it seemed to contradict itself.Ā Can you get a permit on site, if not from a ranger, from one of those self-serve kiosks?Ā In one place, it seemed like day passes were only available online.Ā Ā What about going in person to one of the DNR offices?Ā Thanks.
I found the radio segment on the wpr website in the archives.Ā Very informative and the conversation flowed well.Ā It’s hard to nutshell geocaching in one segment.Ā Heck, I would guess a lot of veteran cachers still discover aspects of geocaching that they didn’t know about or hadn’t taken the time to explore.Ā I like that different entities are keeping geocaching in the news!
