I got into the office this morning and the first thing I do is turn on all of the Christmas lights I brought in to make my department bright and merry. I get to the lunch area and there is an entire strand MISSING! What the fudge? I waited until the last person in my department got in and asked if he did anything with it Friday. His reply was no. So, I went into HR and asked if she’d seen any lights somewhere where they normally wouldn’t be. Otherwise, I was going to ask to look at the security camera to see if the cleaning crew stole the set. Lo and behold, she said walk out by the press and look at the window that faces the WIOUWASH trail. I go out and there is a single strand of lights and a little Christmas tree with a window sticky of the leg lamp from A Christmas Story. I looked at the pressman from the press on the other side and gave him a questioning look. I asked where the lights came from when the other pressman started walking back towards us. He told me they weren’t plugged in on Saturday when they were working so he used them. I said of course they weren’t plugged in, I didn’t work Saturday so I didn’t plug them in! I was kinda irritated at this and it must have shown on my face. The first pressman I saw says, “Hold on, we are all adults here.” I looked at him and said, “My last name is Children!” All conversation was then halted as I stormed back to my office. It was a turd thing to do without asking permission or leaving a note or texting me or something. I’d be more irritated if the window decoration didn’t look nice. Good for the guys wanting to make their area Christmasy, too. But still . . . grrrr . . . .
Does the person know that the lights belonged to you? If he thought they were company property, maybe he thought it was ok to move them. You have a right to take them if they belong to you. That said, I would make sure the person knew why you were taking them back. And, it doesn’t hurt to say that courtesy would dictate not messing with another person’s display. Of course, I don’t know your work environment, and maybe the less said, the better. Still, some people don’t realize their seemingly inconsequential actions really do affect others.

I just checked and you are still on the naughty list. I made the naughty list once. I haven’t made the nice list yet, so I guess the jury’s still out. 😞
