Taking 66 kidlets geocaching tomorrow, assuming the heat index keeps it in the green or yellow range.  If I could choose, I would reschedule, but we will have ample water, lunch, and sunscreen, so hopefully it will be fine.  Last week we were in Sheboygan at the Bookworm Gardens.  It was also hot and humid.  Not as long a bus ride this week.  🙂

Had a chunk of my nose lopped off by the dermatologist this morning…gotta stop exaggerating the size of the fish I catch 🙁

You can just keep on getting creative with the truth and replace the lost tissue…  but seriously, I do hope it was benign and you have plenty of sunscreen and hat with a brim for the future.

In the words of Smitty, Finch, and Rosemary,

Well, it’s been a long day.

I looked at the list and was pleasantly surprised to see I had found a few of the caches.  I went back and read my logs so I could remember more about the cache.  If I could plan such a trip, I think I would choose a few contiguous counties and make a route to include the oldest in each.  One struggle in keeping older caches around could be that if the owner loses interest or has health issues and doesn’t adopt out the cache, it settles into finders minimally maintaining it with new log sheets.  Eventually, it disappears and then gets archived.

My first year of caching, I had maybe 25 finds or less, I went solo to a find that required a moderate hike to GZ.  I got there, found the cache, and realized I had no pen and there wasn’t one in the cache.  So, wanting the find to count, I went back to my vehicle, got my pen, and returned to sign the log.  It wouldn’t have occurred to me to do anything but, since it was my own eagerness/inexperience that caused me to leave the pen behind.  Any other time I forgot, I borrowed from cachers I was with.  An idea that might work for those who forget their pens is to have them take a photo that has a date stamp on it, or take a picture of their watch if they are using a camera and not a smartphone, and attach it to the online log.  Or take a group photo if the cacher is with others.  For my one cache, I wouldn’t get too wrapped up in someone needing to sign the log unless I suspected an armchair log.  I might contact the cacher and ask what the puzzle solve was.  I guess for the most part I figure people put into and take out of geocaching what they want, and if I got too strict about it, it would cause hard feelings.  No sense creating ill will over that for me.  That being said, however, I do think people should sign the log.  It is in the spirit of the hobby and it shows you were there.

I remember a peony event a few years ago that was a rainy day too.

there are a couple of comments there. One which I don’t understand . . . I’m hoping to heighten the awareness of something other than TFTC on logs. This Thursday thought is going to be, forgot my pen, couldn’t sign log . . .

Maybe contact the person who posted directly?  My guess is perhaps they were being facetious, like, the forgot pen logs are equally undesired.

I saw rawevil’s message on the homepage asking for comments about TFTC…but I don’t see how to post comments.  So I will put my comments here.  Yes, I read every log posted, and sometimes reply to the finder.  I only have one active cache.  It is a puzzle.  And it is part of a series.  If TFTC was the only thing a person put in the log, I would be disappointed, but some people don’t think a log requires anything more, or even that.  Because cachers are often doing the whole series, I frequently get the same cut-and-paste log that every other cache in the series gets.  That doesn’t bother me, but it would be nice if the cacher said even just a little something about each specific cache.  I don’t have a fancy GPSr or phone, but don’t many of them have a notes section that you can jot a little something down, and then you can edit it, or just write the log later?  Thinking back to the cachers who taught me the most about the hobby in the early days, writing a good log was something that many mentioned.  It doesn’t have to be long.  Appreciate something about the hide, the container, the theme…  Say something about the people you are with, the weather, LEO encounter, bugs… and yes, THANK the hider.  TFTC or thank you works.  You could even thank the cache owner if you have a DNF.  You still got to give a look.  You can still come back again.  Those are my thoughts.
