Ran into ArcherDragoon at an event in Rochester, MN over the weekend and he had the worst case of wild parsnip I have yet encountered. He had been bushwhacking in wet conditions and feels that the sap of the plant impregnated his wet pants and passed to his skin. The next day he spent the morning in bright sunlight, the phytophototoxins in the sap had their reaction, and he had terrible blistering all over his lower legs. One blister was literally the size of my thumb, not just the knuckle, the whole thumb, and stood up at least 1/2 inch. Several others were sizeable as well and the entire surface of his legs was reddened, blistered and swollen. He had calamined his legs, and you could see the rivulets where blisters were breaking and leaving tracks. Very, very serious stuff. If you don’t know what it looks like, try to memorize the pictures and keep an eye out. My mild encounters were bad enough, I can only imagine ArcherDragoon’s experience 🙁 .

I was really proud of that one!!!

As Jeremy said…the stuff is just plain bad. It really isn’t poisionous…so, to answer Bec’s questions…yes, you can eat it…but you will expose your entire system to the possibilities of being ultra sensitive to UV light.

On a side note…the 6-8 hours is a guess…it all depends on the amount of exposure…I would have to guess my was heavy exposure to the sap…

If I estimate the last time I may have been exposed to the plant sap and time I was exposed to direct sunlight…it was at least 14hours. I didn’t start to have any symptoms until about 48hours later…but, by day 4…I had complete breakout.

Positives about it…the itch only lasts day or two…and you get really cool scares (skin discoloration) for at least a year…mine is still pretty good…so I may be on the two year plan 😉

You can brush up against a WP plant and not be affected…you need to actually be in contact with the sap of the plant (usually means breaking the stems somehow)…unlike Ivy and Oak for which casual contact will spread the oils…

Negatives…unlike Oak and Ivy that have treatments to help clean the skin…once you breakout with Parnsip…it is too late to do anything. The only thing you can do is wash it off right away…first hour at least (there is still much debate to time…I would say 10 minutes to be “safe”). I was out for about a month…with the swelling and “boils”…not fun…but i managed to live through it…

I usually try to include extra information when I email owners of Earthcaches!!! I figure someone took the time to setup an Earthcache, I might as well show that I actually took the time to enjoy the cache and learn something about the area.

I beleive the trouble comes from people not actually reading the cache page either before or after going on the hunt. I tend to read all the cache pages for which I am going to log. Some I read before seeking the cache (Mystery/Puzzle, Multi, Earthcache and Virtual)…while the rest (mainly Traditional and Letterbox) I read when I am logging my finds.

I have only one Earthcache to care for…I have deleted two finds…but I have several Additional Logging Requirement caches for which I have deleted finds from…from my view, if people would actually do their “homework” then their logs would not need to be monitored and possibly deleted…

Until you actually put one together, you just don’t realize how much work goes into monitoring these special types of caches (those with specific requirements).

I feel for you lostby7, I really do!!!
    PS…I really enjoyed Rock Elm!!!

I am looking at those dates…I may be able to attend…still working out the details…

OK, the WGA Board has selected a date of September 13th for the picnic.

I may have been mistaken…but I thought I read a while ago that the Board decided on the weekend after Labor Day…

    You got it!!!

High muggle/urban areas I take a clipboard with me to look “official”. Also helps I don’t wear camo…so I at least look like I am doing something official.

Tree Inspector for the Parks Department…say that and people just roll their eyes at why their local government would pay for that position and move on…usually mumble about how their tax money is a waste…

    😉

Great Job!!! Thanks again WGA members and 2008 Campout Volunteers!!!

These two were the reason we didn’t make it back in time for the group photo. 🙁 It took longer than we had planned for.

And even though it kicked my butt (those of you who met me on the trails may have noticed my round-ness) , it was worth it for a wonderful view of the park!

Nothing in the world can motivate this fat guy to climb a big hill more than a Geocache!

Count me in that statement as well!!! 😉

Just because I got up at 4:30am on mothers day to go geocaching does not mean I do not require sleep…it just means I need very little…. 😈

(actually I get up for work every day between 3 and 4am so getting up early to geocache is no big deal.)

I hope you two can work out a trip to this trail. It was a nice ride.

If you got up at 4:30am to go caching…then technically…wouldn’t that mean you slept in???
    😉

    Zuma,

Count RRGoinPostal and I in for the hunt!!!

This was recently discussed in the National Forums as well…

I would much rather have the caches in the parks then worry about who was able to “sponsor” the event…gotta get the money somehow 😉

I approve of this decision as I think the sport has become more about numbers than going out to see new and unique places.

We have been to the campout at Chippewa Falls and Door County and did not log a temp cache at either one but that is because we decided we would not log temps.

I do enjoy going to the campouts but when they end up west of Madison they end up being a bit too far to drive to.

Us members up north are in the minority because the majority of the members are from the southeast part of the state and that is why the WGA sponsored events are where they are at.

    Hey Paul,

Thanks for sharing your views. I agree that the choice of Governor Dodge makes for a bit of a drive for us folks up north, but at least it is also a drive for those in SE Wisconsin. 🙂 I am sure with rising gas prices, and the more distant location, many people will need to factor the distance in.

I have only visited the park once before, and know it to be a beautiful place, so I personally think it is worth the drive, and am really looking forward to the revisit.

I also agree that it is too bad that sometimes the sport of geocaching becomes more about accumulating numbers, than seeing great places. I try to remind myself often that there is no extra soft cloud in heaven for the guy with the most finds. And as far as I know, Garmin is not yet offering big money contracts to endorse their products for people with big numbers.

Geocaching is not a contest, and there really is no big benefit of giving yourself 50 extra smileys, at least no benefit that I can see.

Sure it is…Who can Drive the Furthest to have fun at the Event???

Now, I know it ain’t going to be me or RRGoinPostal…(the distance thing)…but we are still going to have fun. Grabbing a couple caches and have a couple drinks…(Personally…having a few more beers then the number of caches we will nab will be great this year) and sitting around the fire and BS-ing with a couple friends…the time of fun will be had!!!
