Steve, with all respect, you must be skimming some thread other than this one. This thread doesn’t have anything to do with political difference between geocachers.

It has everything to do with rejecting stereotypes and rejecting profiling based on race, creed, religion, color, looks, accents, nationality etc., which I certainly hope you would agree with.

Did you happen to notice that in these posts, just about every nationality was listed at some point? In fact, I would challenge you to come up with a single nationality that could not claim ‘oppression’ at some point in U.S. history.

So I ask then, who is doing the ‘oppressing’? The mythical ‘they’? The men in black suits? Some unifying consipiricy super agency?

No, of course not. Its the ‘others’… The other ‘nationalities’. For those of poor self esteem always seek someone ‘different’ than themselves to place one step lower on the social ladder so they can look down on them and thereby feel better about themselves.

So we can’t blame the ill-defined ‘American’ as the oppressor. Rather we need to examine ourselves to define who we look down on, who do we ‘oppress’ by the mere act of considering ourselves better than them.

Bottom line, as Thraxman says, if there are no hyphenated Americans, then we are simply oppressing each other. But in reality, the majority of the population does indeed hyphenate many U.S. citizens along ethnic, race, social class, economic, dress, look… and thereby classify them as less American than they view themselves.

Very interesting article, thanks for posting it!

At this point, I need to start printing everything out so I can leave for Brookfield to get everything printed.

So I’m making an executive decsion. The two caches will stay as they are and where they are so the current cache sheets will be accurate. I will however remove ‘Easy as Pumkin Pie’ from the maps as it can not be seen anyway.

For the future, we need to remember to check our individual caches on the posted maps so we can verify all is well.

Witht he caches that close, we should take a pole at the end of the day to see who found the one the WEREN’T looking for before the one thay were. Since they are within the error of the GPSR you won’t know which you have found first until you open it to check the stamp.

One option is to pull one of them. We do have a lot of caches out for the picnic.

Ken, I agree with the less plant stomping the better. With 100+ people out in the park, we want to keep bushwacking to a minimum. With the DNR knowing about this event, they may be looking for signs of ‘nature abuse’ after the event. Along those lines, we should also stress for cachers to try to avoid creating trails and excessive trampled areas leading to caches, if it looks like many have gone through a certain way, circle around a bit to avoid wearing a path. We currently have 43 teams signed up, that a lot of feet to be leaving the trails all at the same spots. maybe instructions along these lines can go out in the email update

Excellent idea! Wish I had thought of that…

Okay, I used Cushing Park Rd. & I94, C & 18, and the bend in 83 at the sectional line. The map is updated, and ‘Barely Legal’ now shows its on the boundary.

Thanks Jeremy! Now, what about Arn’s point of these maps making it too simple?

The caches on the trail map look good, but do we really want to make it that easy to find the caches? Part of the challenge is choosing the right trail, with this map it’s all laid out for you which trails to take.

Okay, FWIW, here is the results using expertgps’ new feature of using your own scanned maps. I calibrated using SPRUNG, LAMPHAM’S SHADOW, and ORIENTEERING EXPRESS.

For accuracy, they look like they line up with Ken’s.

This is a nice feature, I had not tested it yet. It took me about 5 minutes after scanning the map to learn how to calibrate it, topografix did a nice job!

Still, I’m amazed that the trail map is accurate enough to do this on.

    WOW! That’s SUPER!

I’m not going to the printer’s (badlatitude) untill tomorrow around 1 now, so I’ll wait to see if you make any improvements. Should I use this type of map for the trail map handout instead of the regular one from the DNR pdf (without the cache placements)?

I never would have guessed that the trail map was accurate enough to line up with real co-ordinates.

BTW, the latest version of expertgps has the ability to use scanned maps. The idea would be to scan the DNR’s color pdf trail map, load it into expertgps, set three reference points to calibrate the map, and then use it as usual. Maybe I’ll try it out…

    Thanks Mr. A.!

We’ve got everything ready to go to the printers, so the quicker we can get the co-ordinates verified or corrected, the better so we can get everything printed.

One of my employees just bought a GPSMAP76 for caching, and I agree, its got the best screen I’ve seen yet on a handheld GPSR. Nice unit!

We own a Maggy 315, a Maggy 330, and a Lowrance GM100. We never hunt with anything other than our Lowrance. Yes, its heavy, yes it eats four batteries to everyone else’s two. Yes its an older (but still produced and sold) model.

But it has NEVER failed to lock on in ANY situation, including where all the other GPSRs around me are loosing lock.

Plus, its got the most customisable screen I’ve ever seen. Its almost like building your own GPSR with the features you most want.
