  • in reply to: Blinking ‘Cache of the Month’ Graphic? #1744845

We have not heard any comments good, bad, or otherwise on what folks think of the new last week of the month animated graphic on the WGA home page to draw attention to vote for your favorite cache.

Is this one less irratating than last month’s blinker? Does it draw attention? Enquiring minds want to know

BTW, while your at REI in Madison, did you know that just around the corner from them is both a Gander Mountain AND an Erehwon?

As much as we like REI and are co-op members, we actually like Erehwon for camping and hiking supplies better. The madison store is a two story building, with just about everything you could be looking for.

Madison’s West Town area is a camper/hiker/geocachers dream!

    The Erehwon is located at:
    7948 Tree Ln
    Madison, WI
    ph. (608) 833-9191

    and Gander is at:
    7349 West Towne Way
    Madison, WI 53719
    Phone: (608) 827-5996

We’ll get some item(s) to you at the campout… I noticed today that a rep from the GreatPlains group is coming to the campout and hope to take posession of the Wisconsin cache while there.

Our first hunt was a 2.5 miler on a 98 degree day at 90% humidity (Path of Pines), and we LOVED it. Arn & I typically hate hot weather, but there was something about dousing on 100% DEET (which BTW contains 95% DEET and 5% water) and hitting the woods in shorts and sandles (ticks schmicks) that is plain fun. The the traditional dive into a body of water after the hunt!

Hmm… yes, a beautiful day out. I can see it perfectly as I sit here looking out the window. Now, where was I? Oh yes, okay, found the morgtage 1098, got all the W2s. Now where is my daughter’s W2, had it a minute ago. Shoot, slmost forgot those bond statements. Darn, pencil broke…

Well, gotta get back to work, catch you all later

in reply to: New Favorite Cache voting system installed #1734977

Hey Artopsy, the first thing I thought of when Alan put the voting system together and gave it to me for testing was “Gee, I hope this gives Artopsy even more incentive to keep coming up with the super caches he is now ‘famous’ for.” (Of course, I’m not trying to put any pressure on you – but hasn’t it been a couple weeks since an Artopsy cache went up?)

It also gives us all the incentive to strive to place a cache that can beat yours at the polls. That is, those of us with a competive streak.

In your example, you indicated that your ‘offset’ was 35 feet to the SE. That amount of error can’t be corrected using a benchmark. Consumer GPSRs are only accurate, under the best of circumstances, to 50 feet. So in most cases once the GPSR says the cache is within 50 feet (assuming we’re not talking WAAS), it can be anywhere from 0 feet to 100 feet away at any compass bearing. Why 100 feet? Because both the hider and the seeker are under the same constraints; each could be off by up to 50 feet.

For all practical purposes, once the GPSR reads under 50 feet, its time to put it away, mark out a 50′ x 50′ boundary, and start hunting. If its not found, then move to a 100′ x 100′ boundary.

Being off by 35 feet is very typical…

Hmm… lots of coincidences poping up this morning.

On the main geocaching forums, Markwell started a thread on cache event momentoes to give out or place in temporary caches at events.

The topic of cd-roms came up, and I just replied that I happen to have a commercial CD duplicator with built-in printer, and buy printable cds in bulk.

That got me to thinking about those small, rectangular ‘business card’ cd-roms that are given out at conventions etc. I believe that my duplicator can burn and print those as well, I just don’t know what we’d put on them (was think of the campout and/or picnic). The business card cds of course hold much less data than a full size cd, but there would be room for something…

    Any ideas?

Also, if you want a copy of the DIY tape, email us at [email protected] with your address.

We taped it, and bringing it to the campout is a great idea

It makes for a very good intro to caching…

Hey Thrax, is there a link you can provide where the rest of us can watch how the Rabid Badgers are doing?

    Thanks, and good luck!

I always just apply mine above the previous year’s sticker, and work my way up the windshield…

I’ve never owned a vehicle long enough to reach the top!
