Jack up? I don’t believe that this discussion is in anyway tied to the number of temp caches being logged, but rather that we are logging temp caches in the first place. The action that the WGA board is asking input on is the complete banning of logging temp caches at WGA events.
If an event had 40 temp caches, only a single ‘attend’ log might be allowed. Same if there were only 20 temps, or 10 temps, or 5 temps.
The issue isn’t jacking up our finds, but rather logging even a single temp. That’s what the GC Powers That Be are calling ‘silly’.
So, I do not believe that anyone is stating that they would not attend a WGA event due to a decision that prevents jacking up our find scores.
Rather, some of us are saying we may not attend a WGA event if we can’t log and count on our geocaching profile the caches we find, even if its just a single cache we find.
View it this way. What if tomorrow Jeremy announced that GC.com was no longer allowing logs, period. People were free to use his site to view caches to hunt, but from now on people would have to keep their own private notebooks or their own web pages for found scores. I guarentee that many people would stop geocaching. And I think the WGA may see the same drop off in attendance if we are no longer allowed to log the caches we find at events.
So, all I’m personally saying is that if the WGA has an event where temp finds can’t be logged, then I will treat it as an event with no caches, and evaluate my attendance based on the event’s social aspects alone.
On May 3rd, 2000 when Mike Teague found the first geocache, he signed its logbook (logged it). Two months later, Jeremy Irish found his first geocache, and approached Teague with a new website design that added ‘virtual logs’. The point is, from the start, geocache finds were Logged.
The official ‘rules’ on geocaching.com for the activity of geocaching include: 3. Write about it in the logbook. The aspect of logging is, and always has been, integral to geocaching.
As we are all in agreement that the event geocaches at WGA events are every bit as high in quality as the average stand alone geocache, and better than many, there is no valid argument that we should not log the event geocaches we find because they are too easy and used just to inflate counts.
There are many metro areas with such high geocache densities that someone wishing to inflate their counts can easily do so in a day’s hunting without having to wait for and attend a WGA event.
So this leaves only one argument against the logging of event geocaches that I can see; that events are exactly that, social events, with a primary purpose of the gathering, and not geocaching. If this is the bottom line argument, then I would counter that events should then eliminate all geocaching and be purely a gathering.
If socialization is the goal of events, then that is what should take place. Hold an event that is a picnic or campout, and see if people are interested in attending for just the purpose of socializing.
But if geocaching is going to be included, then the integral aspect of logging those finds must be available. There is no logically valid argument to exclude documenting the finds.
If attending the event is the sole aspect that can be logged, then that’s all that should be offered; the event.
If geocaching is offered, then logging finds is integral. My Vote:
If the board decides to eliminate multiple logs, then also decide to eliminate temp caches at WGA events. Make them purely social.Glad the mystery was solved!
And you are right, the way I posted the address was deceiving. That was done so hopefully the spam spyders could not extract the address off of the page. Happy Caching!

Um, I did give you an address to send it to in my first post. Here it is again… ‘abuse at elknet.net’
Thanks!

I need to know which one of the ‘@wi-geocaching.com‘ addresses you tried so I can investigate it. Also, what was the bounce-back error message? Could you forward the bounce email to ‘abuse at elknet.net’ please?

Thanks for the information. I was under the impression that only WGA members could post,
so it’s good you set me straight!
We have wanted to link together the registrations for some time now, and this is a feature
of the new site Jeremy has in the works. It has always caused confusion that there are TWO
places on the WGA site that require registration; membership and the message boards. Yet
this was somewhat by design, and that’s why it has been difficult to link together. When someone registers as a member, we want them to also be registered on the message boards.
But someone that registers on the message boards should NOT also be registered as a member. The reason is that there are requirements to becoming a member that do not exist to use the
boards. And not everyone who wants to post on the boards even wants to be a member. The
desire has always been for the boards to be available to anyone.Additionally, many people register on the boards under a team name where a team has more
than one person. Yet the membership is based upon the individual; you register with a
specific name and nickname, and list what team you are a part of (if any). This results in
a one to many relationship between the message boards and the membership; multiple ‘members’
may share a single message board identity.Bu Jeremy has some great ideas on how to reconcile all this on the new system!

Opossum, thanks for all the ideas and feedback! A couple of answers to your last post…

entered manually?
The opposite of being entered manually is being entered automatically. No one becomes
a member of WGA automatically. Each member has to choose for themselves if they wish
to become a member of this association. There is no way a script could ever know the
desires/intentions of a geocacher to know if they wished to join WGA.It seems not all members are listed,
If someone isn’t listed, then they are not a member of WGA. Everyone who joined WGA
and took the steps to become a member are listed.quote:
Wasn’t there other data that was also mined and presented on the WGA
site in the past?
As one of the three original designers of the site, I don’t have any recollection
of any feature of the site that has been removed.Just a note that I do still use WiFi when handy. Right now I’m typing this while leaning over the hood of my car in the dark parking lot of Beloit’s movie theater picking up free WiFi from one of the near by hotels, waiting for my daughter and her friends to come out to run them all back home. So I do still like WiFi, but love how I can use GPRS just about anywhere, even far from civilization.
I just started last week using my GPRS cell phone and Cingular’s Unlimited MediaNet for $24.95/month. Absolutly LOVE it!
I have yet to have usable throughput under 50kbps, and often have 130+kbps, even out in the woods and other boonies.
I use bluetooth between my laptop and cell phone, so I can just keep the phone on my belt etc., or position it up to 60′ from the laptop in a position of better reception.
Its like having my own special hotspot that follows me around! Can’t beat it for the price and for unlimited usage.

Hi Nick,
All of the domains we host are protected from this type of hijacking already via alternate methodologies, but we have additionally been working through our domains locking them. Thanks for the post.[This message has been edited by CacheCows (edited 11-11-2004).]
Thanks so much for all the posts! Really appreciate it The knee is finally coming along nicely… I was beginning to wonder there for awhile if the surgery hadn’t made it worse. This morning at church was the first time in months I went down flights of stairs stepping normally, not hanging on for dear life thumping down half a step at a time!
several torn cartiliges, including a basket handle tear that had flipped into the joint itself
Yep, that’s exactly what I had. Fortunatly, the fold over hadn’t yet locked the joint.
Happy caching all!
-AlanSorry about the delay in fixing the Recent Logs page. Been busy… Anyway, its back up and running now.
Sorry about the delay in fixing the Recent Logs page. Been busy… Anyway, its back up and running now.
Great map, but the 2002 campout and 2002 picnic are missing (as is the original 2001 picnic that started it all).
Jeremy Irish modified his recent logs page on geocaching.com, it’s now table based. So I’ve got to change my script to be able to recoginze his new page. I’m working on it…
