As I was on the BOD at the time that the WGA page in question was created, but I was not on the BOD at the time no one could remember why National Forests was originally listed, I can solve the mystery. With the exception of the Wisconsin DNR State Natural Areas exclusion, all the other exceptions came from discussions on the Geocaching.com forum discussions. Things change over time, and it is good to try and keep our page up to date with those changes. It is possible that more should be removed, and perhaps some new items added…
Yes, the cotm graphics are still being awarded. I had also noticed that many winners are not bothering to put them on their caches.
I’ll try and get the blue ribbon info emailed out to you tomorrow. Been real busy at work. Congrats!
Cathunter, what is your ‘Organization’? And where is your website? Any idea why the US Fish and Wildlife Service sent this to you?
T&B, so sorry to hear of your loss. Our sympathies and prayers…

Ah, now that would be telling, wouldn’t it?
I first saw this feature on another states website. I asked for the code, and was told by its author to be careful, as he had once made a mistake in the code that caused a denial of service attack on geocaching.com. That’s what started Jeremy’s lockdown of data mining. This person’s script logged into geocaching.com and accessed all the caches in that state one by one looking for new log entries.
So, I scrapped his idea, and started working on my own solution that would not put such a load on geocaching.com. Here is what I developed…
The code on the WGA server:
- [*]Browses every 15 minutes to the ‘Recent Logs’ page at geocaching.com[*]Filter out all entries that are not for Wisconsin caches[*]Strip out geocaching.com page formatting and add in WGA page formatting[*]Add the timestamp and build the page[/list]
There ya go!

I have done the complete hike. Took me about 7.5 hours. Did the hike counter-clockwise, starting from Fontana, where I lived at the time. The roughest part was after passing Lake Geneva (city) and heading into Williams Bay. We were walking into the wind, and by the time we hit the bay, we had major chapped lips. Beautiful walk…
Now on my list is the shore path around lake Mendota in Madison… 40 miles vs. Lake Geneva’s 26.
Of course, the other alternative is using a standard ammo-box:

On a side note… I recently saw the computer that the WGA server should reside on. It was the winner of a recent case-mod contest. A case-mod is where people build and greatly customize their computer cases. The winner had built his computer into an ammo-box! This particular box I had even used myself for our Tales from the Crypt cache until it was stolen. Just click on the picture below to see more info on this computer.

Just a comment regarding the above whois posted by TeamLotsacache. WHile that whois shows that Arlene and I ‘own’ the WGA domain registration, that is only because we did the registration, and we take care of the renewals and the paperwork etc. Should the WGA Board ever want to move the domain away from us, we would immediatly release the domain to them.
Just to spread the kudos, I want to thank Jeremy for having discovered the intrusion, and for his great help during the restoral process. Thanks Jeremy!
Okay, the store is back up for holiday ordering!
I just got the low-down on what happened to the WGA store. It seems that Cafe-Press, the engine behind the store, got tired of not getting the fame and fortune they felt they deserved. So, they shut down the ability for sites such as WGA to create our own storefronts that run off Cafe Press, unless we were willing to pay them enough that they could sleep at night not fretting over the fact that millions were using their software and not knowing it. Fame, or fortune… one or the other.
So, what we are left with is using the free version of Cafe Press, the one that lets the world know that’s who’s behind the shop. As soon as I get the WGA server back to top notch, I’ll get the shop re-opened in its ugly (but free) format
-AlanIs Joe Rouer’s Bar a family (with kids) type of place, or is it more just your adult type bar? We’ll be in DC for Thanksgiving, and are contemplating dropping by there if we would be comfortable having our kids with us.
Thanks!Sorry about cross posting this… If the map is not available, then the topo quad number(s) are given, giving quite detailed info as to where the SNA is and isn’t.

As far as Kangaroo Lake, since that SNA is owned by the Nature Conservancy and the Door County Land Trust, perhaps contacting the local land manager for approval, like CP Blacksmith did for “Top of Niagara,” would be a way to avoid archiving it.
This is just my personal policy, but as tyhe DNR requested no caches in SNAs, I will not knowingly own one in an SNA, regardless of what loacl manager may say. Its an SNA, I’ll respect the DNR’s wishes and not try and go around them.
As for SNAs with out maps, the topo quad is always given in the SNA’s text description, so it is not that hard to know if you are in an SNA.
