I’ve only hidden 2 caches, but a DNF on my 1st let me know when it had disappeared over winter (it is a PNG in a semi scenic area and someone with a few thousands finds let me know he couldn’t find it, and sure enough…)and a few DNFs on my newest one along with an opinion from an experienced cacher helped me make a few changes. A few more DNFs and advice helped me realize that post changes, people just weren’t willing to stick their hands in certain places so I didn’t need to repeatedly hike the trail to check on it.
I’m not sure how many DNFs we have, but I keep an eye on the list and about half of them were disabled within a month or two of our DNFs. This included a 5/5 in Puerto Rico that, now archived, will save people from a potentially dangerous climb and a whole lot of “rain forest ivy.”
Both years we have used our Bingo cards as a way to either sit out some rain or to meet people after we’ve finished for the weekend so there would be no racing for us.
We were looking for a cache on a road in the middle of nowhere under some grape vines and it is my understanding the landowner knows the cache is there….we had several vehicles stop and older ladies literally started yelling at us for stealing grapes.
My cutest story was my niece’s first day of caching when she was 4. I was explaining muggles and she asked what to do if we spotted one so I laughed and told her to whistle and look at the ground. For a good year she would go into an utter panic if we saw muggles. But that first day we came across a couple on the Wild Goose trail near Hustisford. She started humming loudly and quickly gathered up an armful of sticks. She walked past them and yelled “we are NOT geocaching, we ARE picking up sticks, and BY THE WAY WE FOUND THREEEEE TREASURES!”
I posted back in January about the extensive multi we did in Central Park and I had contacted the CO before hand and while in NYC and he was so nice. His entire listing was riddled with entries about how helpful he was.
I’m 99% my cache isn’t an issue, given GC specifies highway bridges and the bridge in question isn’t a DOT monitored one, but in an attempt to be in compliance, should I pull mine from a covered bridge on a hiking trail?
I COVER myself in the highest DEET I can find that doesn’t burn my eyes. I usually stink to high heaven but after one latched on to my earlobe like an earring, I don’t care! 😯 Playing airsoft in northern IL seems to be the worst.
I’m sorry. 😕
(I can’t believe how many ticks I’ve found in the past three weeks!!!)
I’ve gotten a little paranoid. I’m really, really sensitive to it. In 2010 I spent literally all summer covered in stuff between airsoft, camping and geocaching. I couldn’t seem to stay out of it (the snuggly geopups don’t help). Then I got it at the beginning of 2011 while geocaching in the rain forest in Puerto Rico (that one was worth it). The prednisone both times killed me though. I’m still working that weight off.
So now I carry alcohol and after almost every cache I dump it on my hands and wipe off the pen, gps, and camera (no outbreaks last summer, THANK GOD). When we get home I alcohol down the car and then put a large beach towel over the cloth drivers seat. I’m trying to get in the habit of not touching my face.
Almost all of our hobbies are outdoors and I spend way too much time worrying about those evil little plants and vines! 🙁
Hmm, well, the log I c/p goes back to the 2 year mark almost. 😕

I’m more into quality, not quantity. Hence my low numbers (just 997 finds in 3 years). I would rather walk 5 miles in the woods for 2 or 3 caches than hit a power trail of 100 caches.
You’re right. I do need to filter certain caches. I still have to work things out with the friend on the best weekend to visit her then go from there.
Thanks.
Perrot State Park, a small trip north of LaX (at least for people like us not minding driving) is a beautiful place to hike and we’ve found a decent chunk of our finds there and in the surrounding area.
I’m a poor college student and haven’t had an expensive pair of boots since we lived in CO in ’04. But I play airsoft every weekend, which includes mud, rain, and tromping through creeks and the tan combat style work boots I bought for $35 at Target have been tanks for about 2 years with a little bit of cleaning and protective spray. I have a bad left ankle and I haven’t had any problems. I have small feet and was able to find my size but every store we’ve been to has had plenty of all sizes.
Welcome! 😀

This is whats going to kill the game. when a cacher creates a Boycott club my caches first then some other cachers. this really wants me to just arcive all my caches and stop hidding caches , Putting No VTS caches on a geocaching page what is your take this way to play this game ? pretty childlish is you ask me
See, I would be pretty devastated if you archived. Not only have I spent every summer of my life camping at Perrot but this was my 10th or so cache find log:

“I’m new to caching but thought I’d share my story about this cache. 🙂 Thanks so much for the caches in Perrot State Park. I turned 25 this year and my first visit was at 3 months…my family has been back almost every year since and my husband and I kept that tradition up. I was so excited to find so many caches at one of my favorite places. We’re hoping to pick up the rest of the trail ones when we go back later this summer. Anyway we had a great trek to this cache and inside was a chip clip from Cardinal Stritch; a graduate school I’ll be applying to in fall. We’re struggling about what to do if we have an out of state move so I think it’s a little God sent sign to find the clip with the school on it in our favorite place (and one we’d miss a lot if we moved). Also picked up Eagle TB and will try to get it on its way this week. TFTC!!”
And months later I posted a note for when I’d been accepted into a few schools, including Cardinal. You will never know how relaxed and happy finding that darn chip clip made me!
I know it was Trekkin’ and birdin’s hide, but obviously you’ve impacted the game and fellow cachers in your area. And I, down Janesville-way, have very much appreciated your time and efforts.

you can check out any of our hides, we have about 80 of them across the NE part of the state.

tyvm!
My five year old niece is addicted to WSQs when she tells me on the phone that she’s found a “new cemetery” and that I must take her this week!
The shirts look great! I need to get on them for summer! I’m still trying to decide between a printscreen tracking number or adding a patch to the sleeves (love the blue ones).
I wish we had something interesting for (and the $ for!) some pathtags!
