I don’t even bother looking at them.
Haven’t figured out where we’re staying yet. Links and such are appreciated!

There is no approval process. You write the cache description, you post the cache. Done. I could see it causing some problems in the future, but we’ll just have to see.
The problem we’re concerned about is that one badly-placed cache could mushroom into some sort of “anti-caching backlash” that would be harmful to the sport. Also, since the proximity guideline is just a suggestion, this could lead to issues, as well. As glorkar says, we’ll see.
What’s to stop someone from putting a opencache.us on top of or next too a geocache.com cache? Or stopping an opencache.us cache being placed where they should not be if there is no reviewing of such placements? Cachers on gc.com fudge coords and placements as it is and that with some type of oversight in place. No reviewing on opencaching.us? Yikes!
Face it, there are boundless idiots out there and this is a great way to screw over the work the fine folks associated with geocahing.com are doing. While I’m all for competition (gotta love free markets), I think this was rushed a bit too much and not well thought. We’ll see what happens…..
We have a spot ‘saved’. We are working on a night cache that got detrailed for nearly two months as our GPSr crapped out and we didn’t get a new one until last week. We are now working on getting it finished up. We are going out this week to make a night run or two to make sure everything is in place and, if things are good, we’ll have it submitted by the end of this coming weekend. Seems like forever that we’ve had the spot held, but sometimes, things do happen that delay the cache being sent to the reviewers.
I don’t agree with holding spots for an indefinite time with no action though. I would think that if no action or notes to reviewers on the placement status/problems of the cache is made, the area should be opened up after a certain amount of time.
Just to clarify, existing geocaches will not be listed/shown on your site unless cache owners register and submit their caches correct?
If the above statment is correct, what kind of policies do you have in place to ensure that caches listed on your site, are not on top of or near those caches listed on geocaching.com?
Sounds interesting! Looks like we’re planning another trip to the Winona MN area this fall. Might have to see what we can work in.
Add AstroD to the list of campers!!! Decided to tent it after all.
It almost sounds like Carron55’s (I think) cache that she had near an old school that was torn down. Somewhere near cty R and Stagecoach Drive?
Sweet photo. But certainly not a place I’d ever go. Way too high! Being inside was bad enough.
I know my camera was able to just nab the bronze top when we were there! Very cool to see it up close like that!

Just an update to the original topic:
Got a message from Dave Doyle an NGS Chief Geodetic Surveyor, he said he has a near complete database of the old USGS monuments. He is going to see what he can find for me!Dave is a great guy. If anyone can find anything, he would be the one. Let me know what you hear!!!
I like the Gremlins thing. It would explain why all four of my Garmins had the exact same problem.

I wouldn’t mind teaming up for a stone mark at all. I’ve just been in touch recently with Merc. Inc from around here. He’s been grabbing a few marks lately, and not easy ones either. Maybe we could have our very own “Benchmarking Event.” If only we could get a special icon for that
Now THAT would be COOL!!!!
I ws over there today and saw the replies. I think we may have to tagteam for a stone one. Maybe several sets of eyes and brains might work out well.
Nice shot of the CoP mark! I hope to grab that one someday myself! But first I need a new GPSr and a laptop!
CONGRATS!!!! It is addicting isn’t it?
I looked in my records and I have nothing. I don’t even have a USGS mark recorded for Green Lake county. I even scanned Green county just to see if an error was made and I didn’t see anything there either.
My records have all the WIDOTs that were included when I prinited it out a year or two ago. Wonder why this mark is missing?
On another note, did you get the center of population mark? Got a pix to share?
